OK, Straight to the point, (---This Is The Router)--- (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3NwZWNpZmljYXRpb25z&product_uid=35433) Connecting 2 PC's
Windows 98SE...&
..Windows XP Pro
I have.. BT Broadband ADSL
What I want to know is.. Will I still need a ADSL modem?
This is going to be required to be connected via network cable..patch5?
If you know, or you have this one, please give as much info as you can.
I was going to get a different one, but cant seem to find it now, so im researching this. HERE (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3NwZWNpZmljYXRpb25z&product_uid=35433)

Hi. i buy my pc and stuff from ebuyer too! rite. yeah it looks like you wont need a adsl modem. i would say all you need to get extra is some cat5/5e cable :D

Yes, you still need an adsl modem, and it needs to have ethernet connection. The cable for connecting the modem to the router (and everything else for that matter) is indeed cat5. There is 1 network cable provided with the router (3m in length), so you just need 2 more cat5 cables to connect everything together.

Depending on the distances involved, you may be able to use the supplied cable to connect 1 of the pc's, in which case you should get a short patch cable to connect the modem to the router, but not less than 0.5m as this is the minimum permitted cable length.

Remember, if in doubt, get a cable that is slightly longer than necessary. You can always coil up the excess, but you can't stretch a cable which is too short.

Edit: look at the interfaces - there is no adsl interface here, only ethernet, which indicates that you definitely need an adsl modem.

Dam, I got one ADSL USB Router. If you got the time, can you have a look for a Router, that will only use Networdk Patch 5 cable to connect it to. I think I need a Switch is it?

you cant connect the usb modem to a cat 5 router. :(

here (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=34058) this is a modem/router/switch combo that and a bit of cat 5 is all you need.

edit: there is also a cheaper router here (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=48449) but it does not give much details about the product. :(

Actually, that second one 4play found is actually a modem/router, so you shouldn't need anything else besides netword cables (and it even has a usb connection for one of your pc's).

I don't know anything about it, but it has 5 star reviews so it can't be too bad. Excellent price too.

Seems the question from wizz has been abswered so i'll go ahead and hijack this thread.

Could someone tell me whats the difference between this two routers except that one s a modem too?

Or does alone the fact that one is also a router make the price difference?

They are both routers, one has a built in modem, which is where the price difference comes in.

Shit sorry thats what I mean, I meant modem not router in the last sentence. :">

Does it make any difference if I buy the cheaper one and plug it into my modem or if I go with the all in one?

Thanks Benno

Ok thanks Livy,
so I wont notice any slowdowns or other complications when I use the cheaper one in combination with my old modem?

Let's clarify things.

With the modem/router, you don't need a separate modem.
With a router (on it's own) you DO need a separate modem.

But the modem part (whether it is part of the router or separate from it) has to be an ADSL modem.

And if you only want to connect a single pc, you don't need a router, just a modem.

Sorry if I seem to be restating things, but without the specifications of your existing equipment, I thought it better to make things absolutely clear.

I have a ADSL modem now but I want to share my connection for 2 PC, and I thought the easiest thing would be a router.

So atm Im just not sure wheter it is worse to combinate a router with a modem compared to have an all in one.

If your adsl modem has an ethernet connection (in addition to the adsl connection), then adding an external router is fine, you can even just use it as a network hub at times when you don't want an internet connection.

But if your adsl modem only has a usb connection, you won't be able to connect an external router, in which case you would be better advised to get a combined modem/router such as this (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=48449) which 4play mentioned earlier. But that might be a good one to get anyway, it is a good bit cheaper than the Netgear router, and less than half the price of the Netgear modem/router.

I have a ethernet connection. Due to the fact that I'm from Austria I cant order from ebuyer and I havent found such a cheap modem/router on austrian websites.
So I think I'll just go with the netgear router. :)

Thanks Benno
