It's a system of linking to other people's computers to share files. Usually, but not always, illegally. To download things like films and gheymes and music. You might have heard of The Pirate Bay, it's a site (called a tracker) where you download these torrents and then they tell your computer who to link up with to get the download of your choice.

You can't just get into the BT invite section of the board because the mods from the before time decided they had to 'contribute' to the forum before they used it to get invites to these torrent sites.
If I had my way, I'd remove the prior posting requirements, corral them with internet rope and confine them there forever.

But am back now with some spare time on my hands.. Just trying to get my head round what the fuck I'm going to do with myself over the next couple of years or so. What I quickly referred to there without actually saying what I was on about is that from a prospective employer's point of view, they don't care much about the year by year modular specifics of the degree - so long as it's in the right field. They're interested in how you applied yourself, whether you have the dedication to study hard enough for three years to get a top class grade because that lends itself to being a committed employee.

I'm still sort of in the process of deciding how to build up the next year and a half until the semester of October 2013 dawns upon us.. So am taking it nice and easy, relaxing and trying to enjoy myself.. A torrent file is a small file containing instructions that tells your computer where to get the film (or whatever you're downing). This film will be located on other people's computers. These people are the seeders, they share the file with the leechers (you) when you download it.

You download the small torrent file from the tracker. This is a website which hosts a lot of different torrents. Like The Pirate Bay. It doesn't seed the files, the tracker only hosts the torrents.

You can have public trackers, like The Pirate Bay or Isohunt, which anyone can use. There are also private trackers where you have to log in. Much like you get public forums and private forums.

None of this affects your uTorrent, this is just a piece of software which acts as an interface between you, the leecher, and the people who are sharing the file, the seeders.

With some private trackers, you can just sign up and join, but with others you need an invite to get in. Once you get invited, you use that private tracker much like you would a public one - except you need to maintain a good ratio.

If you need an explanation of ratios, let me know because I'm sitting awkwardly and my wrists ache now :emo:

A stupid kitchen device sold here a couple of years ago was this fruit dessicator, you placed rings of fruit on it and it freeze dried them (telly promotion, friends bought one, we tried the results, tasted truly diabolical), it had to come from somewhere overseas, most horrible inventions like that come from the U.K. or Canada, you had a 50/50 chance of being the perpetrators. :idunno:

I don't have any technology I don't use hactually. I never buy any innovation until it's been out for at least 5 years (so all the technowhores can buy them first and iron out all the blips for me), and when I do buy something it's because I can see a proper need for it in my life and then I thoroughly research using a consumer reviewer I pay a subscription for.

The one anomaly is my fucking phone, which I had to buy to replace my beautiful HTC that got stolen in a pub in Camden 3 months into a 24 month contract and that I couldn't afford to replace like-for-like :angry:

It has 3 settings: splash, spray, and napalm, and it frees the hands so that for instance, you can fill the cannelloni tubes while you're waiting for the bechamel sauce to thicken. As I'm sure most of you will know (except Mary because he only eats dogs and noodles), sauces need to be continually stirred to prevent lumps forming. This can be time consuming. I assure you, it makes perfect sense. Does anyone want mine?
