I'm thinking of snatching up a 512 SSD if I can find a deal on one. I haven't paid too much attention to SSD's in the past year but I like the Samsung EVO and Pro series. (open to suggestions on other brands/models)

Might also grab a Fractal R4 case if a deal is to be had. My (original) Cooler Master 690 is starting to look its age.

I'll be waiting on newegg and amazon. Always in the market for storage.

I don't think Newegg is as good as they used to be. Their "big" sales rarely entice me anymore (although some of their weekly sales on specific items are good), and return shipping (even defective items) require purchaser to pay the return shipping.

Amazon is king now, IMO.

I agree about Newegg. They're still very competitive with their everyday pricing tho'. Amazon is pretty awesome but you have to be careful of what you recive if it's being fulfilled by them. A few times I've recived similar items, but not what I bought.

I pretty much just rely on Slickdeals these days to find good deals for me.

I've got a 250GB SSD right now but would like to grab a 512GB. Lot's of good deals floating around right now but shirley something better will pop up for BF.

Good point. I always read the review on Amazon before purchasing. When I notice a certain percent of people having problems on an otherwise greatly reviewed product, it can almost always be traced back to shady merchants selling "similar" products as the quality ones they are supposed to sell. I have purchased from some merchants and most are fine. There is always that small percentage who will cheat purchasers for a fast buck though.

I have found Amazon itself to always be flawless (their free two-day shipping is AMAZING) and I do not believe I have had a purchase that was "fulfilled by Amazon" (which means they have it in their possession for quick shipping purposes) to have gone shady.

It is a good time to have some cash set aside and to wait for deals. Retailers know they have to offer occasional bargains to entice purchasers right now, but they are also in a position where they need to watch how many good deals they are giving away as there seems to be a shortage of "cheap money" floating around if they try to grow too fast.

All this SSD shopping has me thinking about building a new PC. It doesn't make any sense at all since I haven't even overclocked my 2500K yet.

Maybe a new case and motherboard as well... Really liking the Fractal R4 and the Silverstone FT03.

I bought a cool looking case with a door covering the front once. Once.

The idea seems nice. No looking at drives, USB ports, power buttons, etc. Unfortunately, EVERY time you need to use one of these things (and it ends up being more than you realize), not only do you have a door to open, you have a door to keep out of the way. I started disliking the case on a practical level very soon.

On the R4, all of those things are accessible without opening the door; they're on the top. The only thing behind the door is the 5.25" bays and some fans. I would have included a pic but I'm on the iphone, laying in bed watching Night of the Living Dead and cant be arsed during a commercial break.

I do hope it works out for you the way you expect. With the one I had, I ended up selling the PC instead of keeping the unit long-term like I tend to do with computers. Sadly, it was the nicest looking case I've owned. Just could not stand fighting with the door. Certainly did not help that the hinges were on the left side, and the unit sat to my right. I was always reaching around the door- even the dvd burner tray bumped into the door.

Agreed, I used to have a Silverstone htpc case that had a big ass door on it. Hated it so much I bought pretty much the same case without the door and rebuilt it. I did look at that fractal case and it looks pretty nice for a sub $100 case. I like that it has 9X3.5 slots, that's gotta be a record for a mid tower.

I ran what Meg said through my prototype "What he said/what he really means" machine which I bought from some guy on the street who swore he stole it from the NSA (clearly demonstrating my need for something like this :)) and I can tell you with a great deal of certainty(+/- 8%) that what Meg actually meant was that he finds your actions in this, questionable to the point of stupidity.:)

And he just worded it like that to be as inoffensive as possible.:)

That he wasn't straight up with you about this now has me questioning his motives and looking into if there are any motive revealing machines for sale anywhere.

The front I/O panel is on the top of the case. Again, no need to open the door unless I'm using the optical, which at this point is almost never.

All external walls covered in sound dampening materials. pic (http://modcrash.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/casecoversounddampening.jpg)

HDD trays can be turned multiple directions or easily removed completely. Probably no need for that unless you're an all SSD system or need to install a Titan (which I will not be doing)

Built in fan controller.
Silent Series fans included, which actually get good reviews.
Case is an extra 1" wider than normal to accomodate cable management behind the motherboard.
Completely tool-less.

Pics will follow in the appropriate thread if I decide to do it.

Perhaps previous design difficulties have produced something more livable. Keep us posted on whether or not you feel the aesthetic appeal of the door is worth the remaining "trouble". I was merely giving you a heads-up I wished someone had been kind enough to do for me on my earlier case purchase.

I am still a subscriber to NewEgg's daily/big specials. I saw the one you posted, and spent a bit of time with it earlier this morning. Better than the bigger sales, and more like old NewEgg than they have been in the past year+.

Enjoy the deals, it is a good time to have money set aside for when companies like NewEgg offer some real deals.

Heads-up- NewEgg has a fantastic relationship with Polk. Their 60's Model floor-standing speakers at $99 each (I have a pair for our living room) is a STEAL. Good sound at a price you could not build them yourself for.

That was a pretty disappointing BF. Now that it's become such a hyped up shopping day, I don't think the sites even try anymore. Seeing as most of them still have their BF site banners up, I'll assume they aren't doing much of anything for Cyber Monday.

Gonna wait till mid-day and then hit Amazon with free 2-day shipping (Prime).

I did a bit better with the "week of" sales while doing some shopping for the family. I mentioned in another thread I scored some Sennheiser 239's for $39 (with an additional -$5 rebate on a free external tablet speaker), had to pass up on a 128 GB Samsung SSD for $85 due to budget ( :frusty: ) constraints. There was also an Asus router for cheap that I missed out on. Some of the older console games (PS3 specifically) are going at closeout prices today on Amazon.

All in all, there were enough deals to keep me looking, but on "the day" those seemed to dry up at Newegg, Amazon, Toysrus, Harbor Freight, Kohls (still some deals for kids' stuff, etc.), Woodcraft, Home Depot, and Lowes. I realize you are mainly interested in PC hardware here, but the larger picture is also not as exciting as the hype. Get in early seems to be the best move, IMO.

I think I mentioned it before but watch for deals on Slickdeals for your SSD. Lot's of deals to be had, and their "alerts" system is pretty darn helpful.

I bought memory on Newegg and the mobo and GPU on Amazon. Their prices were the same as Newegg but free shipping made it less overall. Case came in today and everything else should be here by the weekend. Spent far more than I was planning to as I just bought everything for a brand new build when all I started out to do was buy a new case. Upgrades have a way of snowballing like that I guess.

Unfortunately I think the missus wants to get Christmas decor completed this weekend so I might have to just stare at all the boxes full of goodies for another week. :pinch:

It's a he, but he does stalk out of the house already so the suggestion has merit...... The plan isn't an SSD, it's this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822122135&ignorebbr=1. Now although I included the Newegg link it cost a bit more here but thats not the rub, it's populating the NAS, those drives aren't cheap and they aren't something that crop up on any kind of a 'special deal' either. That being said I have 10% off through a local supplier as standard as I have purchased alot through them over the years.

In a RAID 5 configuration you are losing one drive as the back up drive anyway so the actual data space decreases. This NAS will give me 12TB of space but there are two very important considerations, the first is power, the NAS only uses 69watts at full utilisation, a huge plus in terms of power consumption. The second plus is a RAID 5 configuration gives far better data loss prevention.

As to the data itself, I actually own a large library of DVD and Bluray discs, but have always been deeply irritated by being presented with the anti-piracy blurb and advertising and menus that you cannot skip past when you legally purchased the disc. It is quite legal (here) to make a digital copy of content you own, so I have. There are also ALOT of digital photographs from our business to archive. The NAS is intended to be a central backup for digital media and a media server.

Now another plus in this and the other part of the evil plan is to build a far smaller and also more power efficient HTPC. Since it no longer needs to be a storage device, simply a player....

Artemis
12-11-2013, 12:54 PM
Well that's a gigantic pain in the arse......to put it mildly. The drives had to be ordered since they weren't in stock locally and took forever to arrive. I finally purchased four Western Digital 4TB Red NAS drives. So I finally get around to assembling the NAS which was actually moronically simple, but then on first boot it must build the volume, that's fine, I know a NAS will take a while to build the volume but 32 hours.... seriously, that is one long ass time to construct a volume, I know X-RAID is slow, I didn't know it was catatonic!

But wait there's more....

So I log in to ReadyCloud and begin to configure the NAS, log in to the Admin panel and am apprised of a new firmware update that I should apply, fairy nuff I download the latest firmware and apply it at which point the NAS reboots updates the firmware from version 6.0.4 to 6.1.4 and begins to rebuild the volume again.....

Fuck!!!!!!!!

I'll get back to you in another 32 hours.

You're completely ignoring the possibility that new firmware might take longer to build the volume. It's one of those 1 week to 2 month projects

One thing though, my maths was a bit off, the actual available data space in a RAID 5 configuration using X RAID is 10.47TB, oh well, it will have to do I suppose. :naughty:

I have some Giant porn too...

But in answer to mj's question I was running out of space and this seemed a reasonable way to futureproof me against that problem while giving me redundancy through the RAID 5 configuration, plus as I mentioned there is the added plus of the savings in power consumption, since with the NAS running I no longer need to have a PC serving files. This alone is a big bonus, that plus a few other advantages make the cost a worthwhile one in the long run for me.

Just wondering, I think capacity over here is 6 or so TB, but I'm pretty sure I'm only using 2 TB across all drives. I guess my original point was that I can't seem to run out of space if I tried, so the 10 seemed excessive for anything general.

Different strokes for different folks, and I am getting tired of reiterating that there is quite a power saving in running a NAS which for me was a major reason for the decision. I do have significantly more data than you, I have different circumstances and there are therefore different reasons for this, so think of the NAS as 'Lebensraum' since more and more space is disappearing....

Oh, Art. I'll stop stamping around the garden and launch into full accusation. Instead of increasing space, what about removing some of that old porn? There will be new porn, and any longing you had for old porn would be best served as a fuzzy memory. Also, full Blu-ray copies are such an inefficient allocation of bytes with respect to the human eye.

If he's using it for movies and such (of any type), storage would fill up pretty fast. I used to have a 4TB external eSATA drive and that thing filled up in just a few months. Coincidentally around the same time I started asking myself, 'why the fuck am I saving all these movies when they're readily available online'?

Oh I don't know, alot of the old porn is far more tasteful than the gynaecological examinations in 1080P we are treated to these days, and at least there was a story, and a rudimentary attempt at acting. Now it is an endless series of cavity widenings by unfeasibly large objects.
