The error was caused by the usiudf.sys driver, although I've no idea what it's for.

you guys have been sooooo helpful....
but i dont think this has anything to do with hardware, i've only been having this shit ever since I reinstall the os (win2k) so I think it is related to that system file.... I am gonna try and replace it with the one from my older version of win2k i backed up a few months ago, see what happens..
System Failure (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;307973) :)

I suspect USIUDF is UDF driver used by cdr/cdrw, try uninstalling the software you have for this device, then re-install.

err no i didn't have to install any software for my optic drives...
I have a Pioneer DVD burner and a LG CDRW/DVD combo drive...
but then it could be the os assigning the drivers to the drives....
i dunno... :(

What software do you use to burn the disks? Thats what i meant by re-installing.
If that doesnt work, remove the drive (physically) from system and then re-install, see if it makes any difference.
