Thursday Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) announced its new 2.5-inch, 5,400 RPM Travelstar Z-series family of hard drives. According to the company, the 500 GB version offers the industry's highest capacity for a single-platter, 7-mm thick hard drive. This is accomplished by using the sixth-generation perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) platters which feature a higher areal density (636Gb/inch2) than current hard drives.

Microsoft is starting to feel the holiday cheer, and has announced a Christmastime sale on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The discounts range from bigger titles rolling out as games on demand, like Just Cause 2 andRed Dead Redemption, to smaller indie games like Comic Jumper and The Undergarden.
The sale includes titles we've raved about in the past, such as the platformer Super Meat Boy and strategy world-building game Carcassonne. There are also a couple of games whose prices we balked at, like Toy Soldiers and Castle Crashers, that now seem a bit more reasonable.

Not even 2 weeks after the official unveiling of the Nexus S, Gingerbread's source code is now available to the public. Jean-Baptiste Quero, an engineer at Google's Android Open-Source Project (AOSP),posted the announcement early this afternoon on a Google Groups message board, making Android devs the world over a very happy group of people.

The European PlayStation site today announced an upcoming official PlayStation app for the iPhone andAndroid platforms. The first version of this app will allow you to check your PlayStation trophies, read your friends' status updates, and keep up with news about the PlayStation console and its games. You'll even be able to share your favorite products with your friends via social networks like Twitter and Facebook.

The MPAA and their colleagues in The Netherlands appear to have shut down more than two dozen BitTorrent, Usenet and other file-sharing sites today. Accused of linking to movies, music, TV shows and games, at least one domain appears to be redirecting to the website of Dutch anti-piracy outfit, BREIN.

In September 2009, we wrote about something very interesting that Google was doing in order to penetrate the business market: they were essentially turning IE into Chrome. Chrome Frame was a plugin for Microsoft’s browser that would recreate the Chrome browsing experience inside of IE. The reason Google did this is that they realized that many users at work were not able to install Chrome because their computers were on lockdown by their IT department. Well today, Google has announced a more straightforward way to get Chrome at work: an MSI installer — aka, a standard Windows installer for businesses.
