In Europe, the Federation Against Copyright Theft is fast becoming the main agency in fighting piracy in light of another Torrent site being shut down.

The agency that is more commonly known by its abbreviation FACT, has issued warnings and threats to a number of sites in the recent months. Even though the agency is based in the UK there is no geographical boundary for them with many reports of warnings being issued to sites all around the world. In the last week alone the Hollywood backed group shut down another site.

In 2005 the site Torrent-Damage was established, and with its 9-year tenor it was an old school player in the torrent scene. However following a threat issued by FACT the owners of Torrent-Damage have decided to shut down the site to cut their losses. ...

It is common knowledge that torrents are used for downloading pirate movies, music, games and much more. Despite this BitTorrent wants to make the world aware that they are not involved in any of the above.

Their vice president Matt Mason wrote a blog post last week stating that their open-source, peer to peer technology is used to share content, but they do not endorse any form of piracy whatsoever.

"We don't host infringing content. We don't point to it. It's literally impossible to 'illegally download something on BitTorrent,'" Mason wrote. "To pirate stuff, you need more than a protocol. You need search, a pirate content site, and a content manager. We offer none of those things. If you're using BitTorrent for piracy, you're doing it wrong." ...

The on-going argument between Google and the copyright industry looks set to continue in public and privately. The point of disagreement lies within Google refusing to remove pirate websites from its search results with Eric Schmidt from Google enforcing this stance. He goes on to state that Google is in the process of making changes to decrease piracy, although deleting websites and monitoring the web goes against Google’s primary principles and philosophy. ...

France has finally revoked a legislation it put in place years ago after many debates and opposition. The new decree will now ensure file-sharers will not have their internet connection terminated for copyright infringement. Now, if they are caught by copyright holders they will face a system of automated fines.

In light of new research carried out by a UK research team it is believed that people using BitTorrent to download music or films is likely to be monitored.

The research team from the University of Birmingham claims that within 3 hours of a user downloading a media file it will be logged by a monitoring firm. When the team was asked about the level of monitoring they all unanimously expressed their “surprise”. The information monitored could be used by copyright holders to bring to an end the high levels of illegal download. The team of computer scientists carried out the research over a three year period by developing software which impersonated a BitTorrent file-sharing client and then logged all the connections made to it. ...

Rather funny thing happened to VLC player. Not so long time ago HBO sent a copyright removal request to Google where they included a download link for VLC player located on domain torrentportal.com.

VideoLan is one of the most popular video players today for viewing of all types of files from PC without additional codecs needed. The software doesn't store any real files somewhere on their servers or offer any features to access copyrighted content.

Mentioned takedown notice is more a false reporting as planned action against the player. It shows well that Google seems not to check reported URLs after they were submitted. On the other side it's understandable that Google is not able to check every link. Monthly about 15 million will be reported, which is a very huge amount for manual check. ...

In its ongoing war against online piracy, the MPAA is currently recruiting new soldiers. One of the open positions that caught our eye recently is that of an “Internet Analyst,” tasked with manipulating media files and monitoring social networks, communities and forums. For those still in school the MPAA also has a job opening for an unpaid summer intern to assist with various “content protection” projects. ...

Appeals court to decide if rightsholders can subpoena 1,058 people in one case.

In recent months we've seen growing judicial skepticism of mass copyright lawsuits. Many judges have concluded that plaintiffs—often pornography publishers—have no interest in actually litigating cases and instead hope to use the threat of ruinous legal bills (not to mention the embarrassment of public association with pornography) to extract four-figure cash settlements from defendants. ...
