It may have been the most draconian and ill-advised copy protection of a copyrighted product since the Sony Rootkit scandal, but now, reports are surfacing that says that Ubisoft has released a patch for the games (including Assassin’s Creed 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction) affected by the infamous “always on” DRM system. The patch will no longer require a constant internet connection, but will still require an internet connection every time the game is turned on.

Throw those dongles away, get your money back, because it's start

Did someone just say custom firmware? Yep, KaKaRoTo, after all the crazy news the last few days, has pumped out the FIRST PS3 custom firmware! What does this CFW allow? Throw those USB boards and those cheap clones out the door because now we can install PKG files without the need of “jailbreaking” the PS3! KaKaRoTo’s CFW currently does not support booting of backups but it is very possible to do and expect the feature to be available VERY soon.

The PlayStation 3 hacking debate continues, even after Sony tried to patch up the vulnerabilities of the system through firmware updates, as the team that hacked the Nintendo Wii many years ago, fail0verflow, has just revealed that it has obtained the PS3's "private cryptography key."

For those of us less technically-inclined, it is basically the master skeleton key for the whole system, and allows complete control over the Japanese console.

Less than a month after its launch, Zynga's CityVille has become the world's most popular game. According to AppData, CityVille just reached 61.7 million monthly active users, and with that, the game nabs the number one spot from Zynga's other social gaming phenom, FarmVille.
This gives Zynga a total of 261 million monthly active users - clearly nothing to scoff at. However, despite dominating social gaming this year, the challenge for Zynga has been to continue to build on the massive success of Farmville and to show that the game wasn't simply a one-hit wonder.

Tis the season to be suing the pants off your nearest rivals. Activision’s lawsuit against former Infinity Ward gents Jason West and Vince Zampella has expanded to include—you guessed it!—EA. Activision claims that EA “set out to destabilize, disrupt and to attempt to destroy Infinity Ward.” Ooh! West and Zampella left Infinity Ward earlier this year, and have since formed a company called Respawn Entertainment, which will create games for EA. Oh: the lawsuit against EA is worth a cool $400 million. Why innovate (or even iterate) when you can litigate?

Following purportedly leaked release schedule, cofounder Frank Pearce says studio has begun talking about title as a recruitment tool.

Early this month, an austere document appeared online purporting to be Blizzard Entertainment's road map for the next five years. Dated April 2, 2010, the document listed quarterly release windows for all of the Irvine, California-based studio's projects, including Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (Q4 2011), Diablo 3 (Q4 2011), and World of Warcraft's fourth expansion (Q2 2012). Also appearing in that chart was a mystery project, bearing the title Titan and a Q4 2013 release window.

Microsoft is starting to feel the holiday cheer, and has announced a Christmastime sale on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The discounts range from bigger titles rolling out as games on demand, like Just Cause 2 andRed Dead Redemption, to smaller indie games like Comic Jumper and The Undergarden.
The sale includes titles we've raved about in the past, such as the platformer Super Meat Boy and strategy world-building game Carcassonne. There are also a couple of games whose prices we balked at, like Toy Soldiers and Castle Crashers, that now seem a bit more reasonable.
