The free web hosting service GeoCities will be archived (around 900 GB of data) and released on the BitTorrent by Archive Team one year after Yahoo! shut it down.
Launched in 1995, GeoCities was acquired by Yahoo! Four years later for $3.57 billion in stock. The Internet giant shut down the service last year.
"It’s not like Yahoo! had some sort of terrible server failure or something," said the Archive Team. "They in fact had made the active decision to turn off the site called GeoCities, an at-that-point 15 year old hosting site that contained terabytes of user-generated content."

A federal judge today issued an injunction against a new Massachusetts law that tried to apply its "matter harmful to minors" law to the Internet. Because it's difficult to ascertain someone's age on the 'Net, that attempt turned out to be far too broad.
The fuss began back in February, when the state supreme court ruled that the "matter" which could harm minors did not legally include electronic transmissions. The result: overturning a conviction of a man who engaged in lurid instant messaging chats with someone who he believed to be 13 (in reality, "she" was the police, who arrested the man when he tried to meet the "girl").

Some finally realize it doesn’t make sense to charge nearly US-style prices in a country with a paltry per capita GDP of $6,600 compared to $46,000 in the US.

The one of the more nerve wracking facets of the war on piracy has long been copyright holders’ insistence on charging prices in a given country that has no bearing in economic reality.
For example, Apple’s iTunes is a global digital music retailer, yet charges customers the same prices regardless of where they live and what they can actually afford. The people of Malawi, which has a per capita GDP of $800, are expected to pony up just as much as the guy from the US where the per capita GDP is $46,000.

The battle against malware sure has changed over the past couple of years. It's no longer you and I in our chairs at home armed only with knowledge and an antivirus app. No, today's fight against trojans, botnets, and other software evil-doers involves everyone from lawyers to the police.

In the case of the recent Bredolab botnet, it was the Dutch police who stepped up. Following a concerted effort involving members of several security firms and the Dutch National Crime Squad, more than 140 Bredolab servers were seized. Here's where this story really gets good.

The Gnutella-based download client LimeWire has ceased all its operations after a U.S. federal judge granted a request from the RIAA. Limewire was ordered to disable all functionalities in the current application to prevent users from sharing copyrighted material. The verdict is expected to have an unprecedented impact on the P2P file-sharing landscape
A few months ago the RIAA asked a New York District Court to shut down the world’s most installed file-sharing application, LimeWire. ...

If someone said a video streaming service accounted for 20 percent of peak American Internet traffic, you might be inclined to think it's YouTube, but you'd be wrong. It's Netflix. Yep, the same Netflix known for sending DVDs by snail mail.
The data comes from Sandvine, a bandwidth management equipment vendor who looked at downstream Internet traffic during peak usage hours. The results also showed that Netflix streaming is the single largest amount of traffic between the hours of 8p.m. and 10p.m.

Next week France will host a European conference on online freedom of expression. The conference is a French-Dutch initiative to draft a code of conduct against Internet censorship. However, a leaked memo makes clear that French President Sarkozy is urging his Minister of Foreign Affairs to turn it into a promotional campaign for the Hadopi anti-piracy legislation instead.

Last week, it was discovered that numerous Facebook apps were leaking user data to third-party companies, prompting the social network’s engineers to draft a proposal for encrypting user IDs. Now we’re seeing reports that a similar leak has occurred at MySpace, but the truth is that almost any social network could potentially have this problem.

Google describes its new Google TV as a "platform that combines your current TV programming and the open Web into a single, seamless entertainment experience." But broadcasters don't necessarily want to see that delicious combination of peanut butter and chocolate Web and TV—and they've now taken to blocking Google TV access.Think of this as a continuation of the "Hulu Wars." Hulu has always made it difficult to access its content on TV screens even as applications like PlayOn tried to blend the two. The reason isn't hard to find: the TV networks that created and control Hulu aren't keen on cannibalizing their TV revenues by making it too easy to dial up an on-demand, ad-limited experience. If you want to watch Hulu, you're supposed to watch it on the slightly-less-comfortable screen of your computer.

News Corp. founder Rupert Murdoch has likely never acknowledged (at least not publicly) that he has failed at something, particularly when it involves a market worth billions of dollars, but he appears to have conceded defeat in his attempt to build a competitor to Google News. According to several news reports today, an ambitious attempt to bundle News Corp. content along with that from other publishers and sell it as a subscription package — a venture code-named Project Alesia — has been axed, just weeks before it was supposed to launch.

Clearwire is getting near 100Mbps downloads on its LTE-based trial wireless network in Phoenix, a company executive said today.
During a keynote presentation here at the 4G World trade show, Michael Sievert, Clearwire's chief communications officer, shared initial speed test results on a trial network the company has built in Phoenix to test the next generation of a 4G technology called LTE, or Long Term Evolution. Clearwire announced it was testing LTE network technology in Phoenix in August.
According to Sievert, the company has clocked download speeds at 50 megabits per second using 10MHz channels for up and down speeds. When using 20MHz channels, the speeds go up to 90Mbps. These speeds are significantly faster than the 3Mbps to 6Mbps average download speeds the company currently gets on its commercial network, which uses a competing technology called WiMax.
