Mark down the date: The age of stealing music via the Internet is officially over. It’s time for everybody to go legit. The reason: We won. And all you audiophiles and copyfighters, you know who fixed our problems? The record labels and online stores we loved to hate.
Granted, when Apple launched the iTunes Music Store in 2003 there was a lot to complain about. Tracks you bought on computer A often refused to play on gadget B, thanks to that old netizen bogeyman, digital rights management. (It’s crippleware!) My local Apple store was actually picketed by nerds in hazmat suits attempting to educate passersby on the evils of DRM.

According to multiple reports late Friday, Groupon has walked away from a rumored $6-billion acquisition offer from Google, and is choosing to go it alone — and possibly file for an initial public offering next year. Rumors about a Google deal for the group-buying company have been swirling all week, with the price Google had offered reported initially at $2.5 billion and then as high as $6 billion. The collapse of the deal was first reported by a website associated with theChicago Tribune, which quoted two sources with “direct knowledge of the situation,” and Groupon’s decision to walk away from the table was also confirmed by several other technology blogs through their own sources.

A lot of ink has been spilled these days spilled over ICANN’s (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) seizing of domain names without a detailed explanation or a full trial which many link to the government trying a new method to stamp illegal file-sharing.
ICANN, the US-based organization managing the DNS root zone starts to appear dangerously empowered. Last year, the European Commissioner for Information Society and Media, Viviane Reding, (meanwhile appointed European Commissioner for Justice), brought up a very important the issue – that of ICANN being accountable solely to the US government.

It appears as though a recent court decision forcing LimeWire to halt its P2P services is having a ripple effect to other parts of the company, as All Things Digital reports the site is closing its online music store at the end of the year and is abandoning its plans for a legal music download service.
The news wasn't good for LimeWire back in October when a U.S. District Court judge issued an injunction, forcing the P2P filesharing site to close down both the website and its client. And arguably, things went from bad to worse when a figure named MetaPirate took advantage of the open-source code for the client and recreated a Pirate Edition of LimeWire, causing both the RIAA as well as LimeWire to scramble to track him down. Those meddling kids.

Whistleblower website WikiLeaks has been kicked off Amazon.com’s U.S. servers after moving its operations just a day ago.

The move by Amazon comes after questioning from U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman, the chairman of the House Security Committee.
“This morning Amazon informed my staff that it has ceased to host the Wikileaks website,” Senator Lieberman said in a statement.
“I wish that Amazon had taken this action earlier based on Wikileaks’ previous publication of classified material. The company’s decision to cut off Wikileaks now is the right decision and should set the standard for other companies Wikileaks is using to distribute its illegally seized material.”

After a lost legal battle, Mininova was forced to take drastic measures a year ago. The site’s founders removed millions of torrents to avoid having to pay millions of dollars in fines. In addition, new uploads were restricted to approved publishers only, a choice that expectedly dwarfed the site’s traffic and user base in the year that followed.

The U.S. Department of State is advising the Congress and foreign governments about the implications of WikiLeaks releasing a massive cache of U.S. diplomatic cables.

The famous whistleblower website recently announced that its next release will be seven times larger than the Iraq War Logs one and suggested that it will redefine global history.

Despite denying it, WikiLeaks is believed to be in possession of a few hundred thousand diplomatic cables from U.S. embassies around the world.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, it appears that rumors of Google Wave's death may be greatly exaggerated. Google announced that it was ending development on the project back in August. But some of Google Wave developers have submitted the code for what's now known asWave in a Box (WIAB) to the Apache Software Foundation.
The project will now be a candidate to become a Podling in the Apache Incubator, the first step in becoming one of Apache's open-source projects.

Google Wave was introduced in 2009 as a distributed, real-time communication and communication platform. But citing low user adoption, Google ended the project earlier this year. Google has made the moves towards packaging Wave in a Box so that developers can have standalone functionality of waves and can run them on their own servers.

Google is making its biggest push yet to expand YouTube's offering of full-length movies. According to a new Reuters report, Google is in talks to gain access to Miramax's back catalog of films.
The company has been steadily adding full-length films to YouTube for quite some time, but they are mostly old or unknown films, meaning the popularity of watching movies on YouTube has been limited at best. If Google is able to stream from Miramax's archives, which includes more than 700 films and quite a few blockbusters, YouTube could become a major destination for movie watchers.

Spotify, one of the most popular music streaming services in Europe, is constantly attracting new members from the seven countries it currently supports. However, it seems that financially the company is not as prosperous as it might seem.

Spotify can only be enjoyed in Finland, France, Norway, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, and this restriction means that inhabitants of other countries do not have access to it.

The consequence is that the sources of revenue are limited, and even though, according to a recently published report, the company's revenue for UK for the past year was $ 18.1 million, it actually translates in a net loss of $26.7 million, because of all the expenses, sales and distribution.

In an attempt to minimize the significance of this financial report, a Spotify spokesperson said: “2009 saw us focus on establishing a new and innovative music service and bringing it to millions of people across Europe.”

Professor Richard Quinn was so disgusted by evidence that many of his students had cheated in their midterm exam that he gave them a lecture that he hoped would teach them a life-long lesson.

After the Mulve music downloading app burst onto the scene in September, it didn’t take long for it to be closed down and cold water poured on the fun. Now, just a couple of months later, a new application has appeared which not only does everything that Mulve did, but adds more sources, integrates music discovery, last.fm, a playlist and download manager, videos, lyrics and more.

While its birth was a relatively low-key affair, the launch of Mulve into the mainstream proved to be quite the opposite. In September the news of its arrival was reported on dozens of sites but it all came crashing down just a few days later. Undoubtedly prompted by IFPI, BPI and the Big Four labels behind them, the British police moved to make an arrest. Mulve was no more.
