Windows XP x64 or Windows 7 x64 better for gaming
Hi !
I was wondering which of windows xp x64 and windows 7 x64 is better for gaming , meaning giving the max fps .
I'm using windows 7 without any effects (aero etc) , but i've read at this benchmark3d.com which makes test with both os tha most of the time
windows xp x64 outperforms windows 7 .
What do you think from your personal experience ?
I know that xp is outdated os , but do we really need to update from xp to 7 just for the looks of it ?

It's not just the looks. Windows 7 has a load of improvements over XP - a more stable kernel, better network stack, awesome power management, you name it. It's what you get for using an OS that's not ten years old. I was a bit reluctant to upgrade at first, but eventually did so and I don't regret it. It is an undeniable truth that XP requires less resources to run, however.
You mentioned disabling stuff such as Aero which is good, but did you try other basic performance tweaks such as turning unnecessary services off? Check Black Viper's site and the SMART utility - both will tell you what every service does and how important it is (many of them have dependencies, some of them hidden, for example if you disable "Power" -> bye bye audio), then give you the choice.

I have ditched Windows XP a long long time ago. Performance wise, a tweaked Win7 installation runs way smoother on my poor netbook than a XP one.
Benchmarks are not always a true depiction of a real life usage. Many games take advantage of Win7's way more sophisticated kernel and multicore capabilities. Just bury XP, it's where it is supposed to be, dead and buried.

windows 7 x64 is better for every thing you can do with pc.

When I want to play high end games I usually load up windows 1.0. (pic related... it's my desktop)

In all seriousness...
I used windows xp 64 bit and I remember having driver issues actually....
I only install xp for three reasons now:
1) Someone else wants xp
2) The machine is running on lower specs than tiny7 minimum requirements (rare), xp performance in this case
3) A home server box with low specs that I don't want to have to mess with (explained below)
The problems with tweaked windows 7 OS:
1) There are so many tweaked versions it's hard to choose which one to download
2) They all seem to be missing core Windows 7 elements, causing program/driver/stability errors
3) Most of them come with a out of control theme made by the tweaker, that is a pain to return to normal
You name it I have tried every tweaked 7 in the book probably: tiny 7, black 7, electric blue 7, batman 7, performance 7, gaming 7, etc....
I've recently found one I like though: it called windows black 7 (I'm sure there is like 10 different people who made a version with the same name lol)
To answer your question:
Windows 7 x64 ultimate or enterprise is your best bet. If your that worried about performance try looking for a tweaked version that you like.
In my experience the "upgrade just for looks" was totally worth it. Everything about windows 7 has made my Daily computer usage more accessible and convenient.
Another large factor is you can only get Direct x 9 on xp.... The industry standard is now at 11 if I'm not mistaken which is not supported on xp.

I wouldn't recommend Tiny7, really. eXPerience did an excellent job with MicroXP, but his Windows 7 releases lack a ton of stuff and that causes plenty of problems.
A friend of mine made a custom, light edition that you probably haven't tried, since only a few people got the links. He removed the really useless stuff (games, very old drivers, languages, etc.) and didn't change anything else. I've been using that since April and had no trouble. You can shoot me a PM if interested.
