Starcraft II Beta starting!

So do this mean that access to the beta is only available if you are a paying subscriber.

Or is there another route?

Well you have to have owned at least 1 previous Blizzard product (Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft, etc.) to opt in for the beta and have a chance of being selected.

However, once you are chosen, the beta itself is completely free of charge.

Official release date is July 27th (this year). Till then... beta testing.

at this moment beta is really easy to find... you can pre-order the full game and get a beta key! this game owns ;)

The beta is pretty nice, I can't wait until the full game comes out.
