i would strongly recommend a Pioneer 105/A05 or 106/A06 burner rather than an HP. the Pioneer models are just extremely reliable with a lot of different disc brands.

How much are they? If over $300 its over my budget lol :(

the 105/A05 should be less than $150, and it uses DVD-R/RW discs.

the 106/A06 is closer to $200, and it's compatible with both DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W.

both R/W and +R/W should be playable on most players-- it's just that different burner/disc companies are pushing one format or the other, and a single standard hasn't been established yet.
