Re: BT community is dying?
BT is not dead, it's just that there is no reason to chase private sites. :) I use public sites exclusively and I get an averate of 1500 kbs speed and there is hardly any movie I haven't been able to find. Occasionally I will find a rare torrent with only 1 or 2 seeds, and then I just live with the 30kbs speed or download it with usenet in that rare instance. If BT were dead, why is it that there are always more people viewing the BT section of this fourm vs the usenet section of the forum ? :)
Unless of course you mean the " community " specifically, in which case I can find lots of user comments and ratings on sites like KAT, isohunt and the pirate bay, in fact, it's one of the reasons I like the big pubic sites.
I meant to write public sites, not pubic sites  I'm sure there are lots of those as well but that's another forum.

mlindsay: What posters are saying is a major advantage of the private trackers is freedom from legal hassles (for example law suits). Why do you list isohunt as a site you go to? I am certain that FST ran some posts a while back about isohunt getting into legal trouble and henceforth deciding to list only legal (non copyright infringing) torrents.
Re: BT community is dying?
@Swepsycho, I agree with nearly every point in your post.
Welcome back, btw.

The reason I list that site is because I can find tons of movies ( yes including the infringing types ) and it seems to be a good resource. All of the major torrent sites comply with takedown requests ( well, I guess TPB doesn't ) but it doesn't mean that you can't find that same movie or album on another file by another uploader. I also think you would be hard pressed to find any major torrent site without legal issues, but it doesn't seem to stop most of them :)
Lawsuits I guess are becoming more of a concern, but I think it's mostly the major uploaders under the gun, I have personally never heard of anyone I know getting sued for downloading.
Re: BT community is dying?
I find if anything I use torrent sites more, but talk about them and participate in their forums less. It does seem like the smaller trackers are having less discussions, but maybe it's my perception because the topics are in large perpetually the same.
Re: BT community is dying?
It's fairly obvious why the private BT sites are much quieter now than they were several years ago - and it's nothing to do with activity.
There are more people using bit-torrent now that ever before.
The reason is dilution.
There now way more private BT sites than there used to be and most of them have just as much content as any other. At least non-specialised content such as the latest movie and tv releases - which is what 80% of BT users want. This means that they're easier to get into and that the formerly 'hard to get' sites are emulated way down the food chain so they don't seem so special any more. Users are now happy with the sites they have and don't care so much about the elites.
Supply and demand. The supply of private torrent sites has increased, so the demand for them has decreased.

Isohunt did use to redirect people from the US to a "lite" version of the site, but it appears they don't do that anymore, and they certainly do not refrain themselves to offering legal torrents only.
