the only difference between an intel approved power suply and any other power supply is that the intel ones have an extra connector with 4 pins for extra motherboard power. All intel boards, and some amd boards, need this plug.
if you have this plug but don't need it it doesn't affect anything.

Why does this strike you as odd?
Many so-called 500w PSUs are incapable of providing continuous and stable 275w.
Those "500w" are only available in the millisecond before all the caps explode and the traces melt.
I did that thing once and i need like 280watts. ;)
