bump!
Hey,
I use Windows 98se, can anyone tell me exactly what the modified values are supposed to look like please!
cos i dunno whether i am doing this rite?
all the values are supped to look the same except 1 in the side
I dont buy that :lol: . This tip may help page load performance but in no way will it increase file download speeds. If your on 56k then thats all your gonna get is max 56kps nothing more. Because thats all your modem is capable of.Quote:

This works! I didn't even reboot and noticed a difference. I'm on dialup and I had something downloading at the time yet I noticed a difference.
Speaking of 56k I think it should be free. every country or state should have local ras (routing and remote access) servers where people can dial in and connect to the net for free. I mean damn what the hell do we pay taxes for? :huh: Luckily I dont have to deal with that problem. :D [/b][/quote]
although he did not say it would make your downloads fater, Read it B)
Perfect Cheers !! :DQuote:

This tweak will help web pages load faster, it has no real effect on download speeds, just helps your pc look up websites faster thereby speeding up how fast the page loads and making web-surfing more enjoyable.
For XP & 2K
use run, type in regedit and navigate to the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic
es\Tcpip\ServiceProvider
For 98, 98SE & ME
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic
es\VxD\MSTCP\ServiceProvider
On the right for ALL OS's change these entries: (ALL values are HEXIDECIMAL)
Class = 1
DnsPriority = 1
HostsPriority = 1
LocalPriority = 1
NetbtPriority = 1
To change the value right mouse click on the value and select modify and enter the values above once you have done all of them reboot to take effect and see how fast your pages load.
;)
BUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes modify those to say 1. Its works great...Quote:

hey sorry for being so dumb but help plz
but i use 98 se and my settings are in binary. this is what they were originally
"LocalPriority"=f3,01,00,00
"HostsPriority"=f4,01,00,00
"DnsPriority"=d0,07,00,00
"NetbtPriority"=d1,07,00,00
"Class"=08,00,00,00
this is what they look like after modification
Class = 01
DnsPriority = 01
HostsPriority = 01
LocalPriority = 01
NetbtPriority = 01
is that ok
or should it look like this?
Class = 10
DnsPriority = 10
HostsPriority = 10
LocalPriority = 10
NetbtPriority = 10
^ they should look like 01 ;)
Hey! Things work a little better, I'm running ADSL so uuhh I don't see "too" much of a change, but other than that it's better than it was before :rolleyes: .
Thanks showstopper for the speed tip :lol:
Fantastic.
I'm on 56K and even though this tip doesn't increase connection speed, pages display significantly faster than before tweakage.
showstopper496, my hat is off to you. :)
Hey Showstopper,
Thanks dude, you da man!
bump
Holy $#!@, it really does work! Why were those values set to such odd numbers when 1 is so much better? Has anyone discovered any negative side effects yet? Everything seems fine to me so far. :)
Thanks for the great tip, Showstopper!
now is that for ie or i assume it will work with any browser since we have tweaked the os right

Excellent!
Works great :rolleyes: even for adsl users
Excellent work...Amazing...
I've done this tip in the past and yes it does work on most, yet if u want to make it even faster then here's my tip:
1. understand exactly how Name Resolution works and what steps it takes to process your request2. make sure that the value assigned to HOSTS is arithmetically lower than that for DNS and WINS
- NetBIOS name cache — A client first queries the local NetBIOS name cache. NetBIOS names and IP addresses are preloaded into the name cache when a #PRE entry for the names and IP addresses appears in the LMHOSTS file
- WINS server — If the unresolved NetBIOS name isn’t found in the name cache, NT tries to locate that name using a WINS server.
Broadcasts within an IP subnetwork — If the name cache and WINS server aren’t available or fail to produce a match, the client typically tries a broadcast to the other computers in the network- LMHOSTS file(s) — If a broadcast fails to resolve the name and “Enable LMHOSTS Lookup” is checked, the client looks at the LMHOSTS file for the entries that weren’t preloaded into the NetBIOS name cache
- HOSTS file — If the LMHOSTS file search fails, the client then looks at the HOSTS file
- DNS server — If “Enable DNS for Windows Resolution” is checked, the client queries the DNS server, which returns the IP address

3. Other registry to consider tweaking4. Last but certainley not least, is adding the IP addresses of the sites u visit often. Remember, without this step, the query to identify/translate the name addresse you typed is initiated.
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NBF\Parameters
Note that AOL doesn't use the standard TCP/IP stack (at least not the last time I checked)
In conclusion, these tips may or may not work for you. It has for me, for many years and with the new addition of NetLimiter, believe it or not - some sites decline my connection "error-connection is too fast". THIS IS NOT A JOKE.
Use with caution and always backup your registry before attempting any kind of change. good luck.
btw, those 2 reistries to consider tweaking, just copy and paste in google.
I didnt get what u said at no. 1, can I know in more datails?
Bump for the people who missed out
Thanks, I did this once, but reformated since then. Works great, thanks for the bump. I suggest everyone do this.
lol you shoulda bumbed this on the 23rd...
made it the 1st anniversary of this thread :lol: :lol: :lol:
Rafi
Old, but still usefull.
so whats the technical reasoning behind all this, has anybody actually found out?
In other words why does it work?
you can't get something for nothing, so whats being lost
Changes the priority that stuff comes in... :unsure: :lol: Made that up lol.
But thanks for the tip.
i know i dont really care. If it works, it works :lol: :lol:
kool
everything seems fine to me so far! thanks for the tip!
