anyone else? :(
ideas for a slow pc?
Did you say that you were using a different brand disk?
If so, that is likely the culprit.
If your system were at fault I should think that everything you do would be unbearably slow.
yea but i dunno wtf happened....it just got slow from one day to another.... :(
well i tried to defrag.....kinda got stuck in 1%.... with AV off and everything off :(
could an xp-repair fix anything?
DWk
I really think you should try to narrow down your list of possibilities first.
If your defrag stalled at 1% then the first place to look is the condition of your drive(s).
Using Diskeeper (which I recommend highly, btw) I can defrag in under 15 seconds.
Why not bite the bullet and do a thorough system wide maintenance sweep and then see what happens.
If that doesn't help, try a different brand of blankCD.
If (when) all else fails do a format and reinstall. Then take care not to let things get out of hand again.
If you still want to defragment, get Defragmenter Pro Plus from HERE and do all your drives at once. It does them properly, as well. :)
Sorry, I lost track of your UDMA efforts, did you find out how to change the settings? They're in Device Mangler but not on the CD drive properties, they're on the IDE Controller properties.
Isn't there a setting in Nero to use either Xp's or Nero's ASPI interface? You could check which one it's using...
Run the Nero InfoTool (you'll find it in the Nero Toolkit sub-menu) and once it's had a sniff of your system, you'll be presented with some info. Click the ASPI tab and you'll see a drop-down box. I have a Lite-On 48x24x48 and have this set to System ASPI, with a yellow box down the bottom of that window saying ASPI is not installed but all my discs still burn at 48x. XP has it's own CD writing capabilities anyway, and Nero must be using that. Perhaps yours is set to Nero ASPI, which never worked for me in the past (stopped burning altogether with my old Mitsumi) and I have no reason to believe it would be better than the way it's running now.
Edit: just some spellings :)
k...about udma, yea i found it...but its set up correctly.... it was before 2...
about the nero toolkit and aspi stuff...its set the same as yours... so that cant be the problem.... ima have to keep narrowing it down...
i downloaded the defragmenter pro plus.... i installed it...gonna defrag i guess.... i be back later, ok?
:)

Good luck.
Let us know how it goes.
k its goin now....almost an hour i think....and i think its still defragging the boot drive (the one that has windows and the programs)...... and my hard drive is working but its not doing anything....
lol the pc just keeps gettin better
Nothing like a good defrag to show it who's boss.
i meant that its just stalling lol
Oh.
That's not good.
Does your defrag app have the option to perform a boot-time defrag?
That should go much more quickly as it isn't working around Windows.
Defragmenter Pro Plus does its business during a bootup so if it is still going I'd say that is one muh'fuh of a fragmented drive!Quote:

@ DWk
I know another hour or so seems like a long time but with a seriously fragmented drive the program could take that long. It might not look like it's doing anything but sometimes it doesn't yet is still working away.
well i stopped it.... i think the best should leave it at night
k i left it at night but i dont think it worked...... its a little faster but the problem is still there....
dunno but ima burn a cd today and if its not working, i think im goin for the reformat :(
Whoa man! At least try a Repair Install before formatting.Quote:

Did you try a different brand of disk yet?
That would be too easy.Quote:

Apparently we're going straight to the complicated solutions first.
Although....even if a different brand disk solved the burn time problem, he is still faced with what appears to be a world record fragmented disk.
This might require a whole new PC.
Now you're talking!Quote:

J/k. Did you try running the 'boot time" defrag?
K lets go from response to response....
about the diff brand disks....yes i did - the problem appeared with my "past" discs, and now that i bought 50 more (of which 7 are still virgins :w00t: ) its the same problem....
well i dont think i wanna do a repair disk....well i know it could fix some things but i like format better.... what better way to clean up your pc.... either way, lets face the facts: format and repair are practically the same....since the actual problem (or maybe take-time problem) is installing progs+games+everything and configuring it... i prefer just deleting everything so that theres no room for fragmented things or virii (which i dont have)....
about the boot-time defrag.... i think thats what Defragmenter Pro Plus does.... i left at night then at morning it was done.... but i dunno if it worked... i havent burned yet
any more ideas?
Thx
Mate i cant see it being from your hd fragmented. If it has probs caching the files,,near enough all your programs & windows would be running a bit slow.i'd go with somthing to do with dma.Double check them again on all drives.Go to nero tool kit>nero info tool>configuration tab,,,it'll say dma on/off.You could also check how fast its caching the files,
Nero>file>preferences>cache...then press the test drive speeds.Other than ...i dont know. :D
holy sh1111111111111111111111t..... k it says my main drive (the one that holds windows, progs, games, etc.....divided in 3 partitions) has DMA off....
but when i check in ide primary controller....it says DMA if available....how can i change that so its ALWAYS dma?
w0ot....k im lookin a light across the dark tunnel :)
oh yea im other burner has dma off as well (not the one that i burn with.... my lg 12x8x32) how can i turn that on as well?
thx
DWk
That does seem a little slow, mine takes around 4 minutes for a full CD.
QUOTE]but when i check in ide primary controller....it says DMA if available....how can i change that so its ALWAYS dma?
[/QUOTE]
It is set for dma mate ..but its obviously not available. You must have a conflict somewhere mate ,it could even be with xp.I've read it got a few problems with dma.You could see if there's an update for you motherboard or see look for some ide controllers for your board.Tri updating all your drivers, just have a mess around in that area and hope it goes away.
I rembr ,,about the xp /dma problem was form a post of lynx's.Something about if the drive has 3ish errors it reverts back to poi mode.Maybe look in to that too.
weird cuz the hdd would be running in dma like a couple of weeks ago
ima look for his post....
Oh you're gonna kill me for bumping this thread, but oh well.
Ok, I actually fixed this problem (temporarily) with a little program (from Via) that forced my drive into using UDMA mode. The problem is, however, that the problem returned (who knows why), and I need that little program again. The other problem, however, is that I forgot the name of the program, and I have too many cd's to go through to look for it.
It was something like Via IDE Controller, or something like that.
So if the person that let me know last time about this program, please come forward and enlighten me again :D
Just a suggestion here , but i wouldnt be burning vid files at 48 anyway, they will have problems reading if u do , i always burn at 12 to 16 for movies on avi, and even slower if they are vcd
Run>Regedit>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>ControlSet001>Control>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Now, you have to go to either 0001 or 0002 depending on whether the problem device is on the primary or secondary IDE controller.
Once you're on the correct one, go to either "MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed" or "SlaveDeviceTimingModeAllowed" (depending where the problem drive is on the IDE cable). Change the value of the key to "ffffffff" in hex, save, exit regedit and restart computer. Now the device should run at full speed again (until you get any CRC errors).
P.S. As you probably know, you should save a copy of the registry before you go fiddling with it :)
edited so as not to mess up borders
These check for CD burner problems and the force will fix.
aspichk.exe
Force ASPI.exe
The links are gone, check for programs though.
;)
That's not true. I always burn movies at 52x and never had a single problem. It might be a problem for some people depending on your burner, your player, your media, and what software you use to burn.Quote:

Oh god I'm asleep. But please let me know.
As far as the other people's responses, you obviously didn't read my reply ;)
Bump
I'm here for a couple of hours, so let me know :)
Nevermind I found it :D
If anyone wants to know, VIA IDE Miniport Driver was the program (well.... is) that puts the HDD on UDMA always :)
