shit never mind lol
The cpu is the amd duron 1.4ghz 233 , i am using a 400 watt power suplly with the new pc, the old pent II had a 120 watt psu
try using the 120watt psu, but only plug in the motherboard ram cpu and video card, thats it. then try to turn it on and see what happens. if it works then the power supply is faulty. if not then its het motherboard or cpu.Quote:

Ok i will try that now and post results
the other power supply posted the motherboard, but it says CMOS checksum error defaults loaded. Now what should i do about the power supply?
i didnt bother reading thru the rest of the posts
if the processor is suspected, remove it. the system should post without a chip (if its bad it should still post anyways)
ur mobos fucked, sorry man.
oh ur fine. ur cmos batterys prolly dedQuote:

first try turning it off and on several times. if the message doesnt appear anymore then you should be fine. no replacements needed. otherwise, invest 2 bucks in a new CMOS battery. look at the model # on the old one and go to your local electrical store (i.e. a radioshack) and buy it.
ur mobosd fine :D
ight but i now need a replacement PSU to replace the 400 watt dont i? Even with the error i can still press del and go into the bios set up. The power supply i tested with is a 120 watt . what should i do now?
Get the power supply replaced.
Not true. Without a CPU it won't post.Quote:

So get a new PSU and then hook everything up and go into the bios and all by pressing del and dont worry about the error i am getting on boot-up?
Just start by getting the 400w power supply replaced.
When i do that can someone walk me through setting bios up or something to that effect?
Go into bios, select defaults.
Then select IDE auto detect.
If you've got usb keyboard or mouse find and enable USB legacy support.
Then save & exit.
That should be enough to allow you to install windoze.
lol sorry ur right it wont postQuote:

Where's the processor that's going to run the bios setup?
what if windows 98 is already loaded on the harddrive?

(note to self: talk to people who actually tried things that i say)
look, the BIOS is dealt with thru a chip on the mobo: no processor needed. ive tried it with no processor and with a cracked one: i know it works! geez... <_<
now its ur turn to hit ur hed on the wall buddy :frusty:
Anything you say. :partytime: :jester:
I just tired the 400 watt PSU on a old comp that had a pent II in it and it worked but i want to know how come it wont work on this other computer?
Maybe just one of the voltages (possibly 3.3v) is down, or at least below spec.
Could be that your old PII board doesn't care about that voltage but your new board does. I'm guessing that your old board uses 72-pin dimms for memory. As far as I know those run on 5v. The PII core voltage is probably also derived from 5v, in which case the 3.3v line would be redundant on that board.
Your new board will almost certainly use the 3.3v for processor core voltage, and maybe for memory voltage too.
ight kool
you get that checksum error the first time you start up a mobo whether it be first time ever after buying it, first time after replacing a battery or clearing cmos, or first time after a new bios update. once youve gone into the bios and set stuff up it wont get the error anymore.
first worry about getting a replacement power supply. then you will probably need to change boot order in your bios to floppy, cd-rom, and last hard drive. now you willl install a new operating system onto the hard drive (old one most likely isnt going to work with the new parts)
I put a 300 watt psu in that comp and it works, i put a 400 watt psu in mine and it works, i set up the bios on that other comp and i am trying to put xp on it currently
