Come on JP, you're an inteligent man, there is no proof to say either way, yes it's possible and probably likely that we are not as advanced, but by the same token is it not also possible that we are not behind but in fact more advanced?

the problem i see with your supposition is that it would mean the aliens departed on their trip 1000 years ago. that would mean they had the capability of space flight at a time when we were barely aware that other planets even existed.
