Re: Wireless Router Probs.
Do you use any 2.4 G phone hardware?
Beaucoup problemos, there.
Disconnect any of that stuff and see how it works.
Turn off the microwave while you're checking... :P
Re: Wireless Router Probs.
What exactly is 2.4 G phone hardware, I don't think we do but could you clear up what it is.

Do you have anything which would interfere with the same band that your router is on?
Re: Wireless Router Probs.
Ok, we have a cordless phone so when my housemate's off it i'll try.
Using neighbours wireless network at the moment, they don't secure it.

Take a look where you are, FILESHARINGtalk.com
Are you saying that you didn't find this place through downloading films, music etc.?

Maybe Sam should have said dangerous?
Your neighbor could cause you some difficulties if he found you out.
Your problem with the FST crowd is a bit more...dispersed, or diffused.
See what I mean?
Re: Wireless Router Probs.
I know what you mean. We're only doing it temporarily till we get our router going again.
I unplugged the wireless phone, but I still couldn't get our router to work, we haven't got a microwave so thats not an issue.
On the front of the router thre are four lights:
Power, Sync, Online, WLAN
When its working all four lights on, then it drops the connection and the online light goes out.
But now the Sync light has gone out and it's just got Power and WLAN on.
Confusing me, we're going to give 3COM a call tomorrow, but i figured you guys here will probably be more helpful than someone in a call centre who doesn't really know what they're on about.
Anyone got any ideas what could be up with it?
Re: Wireless Router Probs.
I'm no expert, and have only set up my own (Linksys), but I researched them a bit before I bought mine, with an eye toward ease-of-use and set-up.
While I'm aware 3-Com is an industry standard, it may be the case you've got a unit not suited for your particular application, or possibly your documentation is incomplete?
I don't recall any 3-Com being mentioned as a popular router for personal use, but I may be wrong about that, too.
Calling 3-Com wouldn't be a bad idea, at that... ;)
Re: Wireless Router Probs.
How far away is the receiver from the router?
Is it going through empty halls, or solid concrete?
Does it work when they're 2, 5 and 10 metres apart?
Do you have a decent looking sister that also lives in London?
Have you tried making sure that both appliances work before "installing" them?
Re: Wireless Router Probs.
There you go; Sam will get you sorted. :)

I've got my laptop about five metres from router, with nothing in the way. I can connect to the router, but the router doesn't connect to the internet, it worked when we first got it for about a day then stopped.
I don't have a sister, is this going to mean the router won't work? LOL
EDIT: Typo
Re: Wireless Router Probs.
Just don't let your neighbor find out. :frusty:
Re: Wireless Router Probs.
Quick update on situ, got it all fixed. Housemates boyfriend sorted it, firmware update or something i think he said.
Cheers for all help given though.
Hugo.
Re: Wireless Router Probs.
Moral of this story is update the software/firmware or drivers before looking to see whats broke, 9/10 times hardware right out the box is generally packed with first edition drivers thats buggy as f@ck :D glad you got it sorted though you can leave your neighbours connection alone now  ;)
BTW may be a bit nieve of me but will he not show up as online on your neighbours pc?
