Have you checked with Sony? They may have insights or updates to the BIOS.
Try reseating the ram or reinstalling one at a time (don't forget to unplug and remove the battery before doing this)
I think the ram is going bad...
I think i figured it out.. i reseated them and then i turned it on without pluggin it in (just runnging it from the battery) i went to the bios screen and it said i had 512mb again.. so i plugged it back in and went back to the bios screen and it said i had 256mb again... so i unplugged it again and loaded windows with running the battery. i went to control panel and it said i had 512mb again so i plugged it back in and like 15min later a blue screen popped and really quick and it rebooted my cpu. and now it says 256mb again cause i have it plugged in.. the blue screen flashed so fast i couldnt read it.. what could be the problem?
To see the blue screen right click my computer -> properties -> advanced -> startup and recovery settings -> uncheck 'automatically restart...' -> apply
Reboot the system, press F8 as soon as it starts to load.
That gives you a list of options, one is to disable Automatic Restart, select it, then boot normally.
Next time the problem occurs the "Blue Screen of Death" will stay visible allowing you to read it.
:P
You were faster, my way is easier.
well i figured it out officially i took out each ram and stuck it each slot and one slot doesnt work... is there anyway to fix tht or do i have to live with 256mb of ram??
New motherboard might fix it.
where can i get a motherboard for a sony vaio grx550 and are they expensive
From Sony and yes they are very expensive.
How about your warranty? Its all gone?
Usually reseating a ram module does not invalidate the warranty unless of course to reach the slots you have to open the whole notebook :D
Where are the slots for your specific model located?
theyre located underneath, all u got to do is unscrew one screw and pop a lil cover off and theyre right there. and the warranty is up
Well.. They'll never know! Just put the original ram back in and you're all set.
well ive found a petition online sayin tht this is happenin to alot of people with the sony vaio grx models and it gave a link to a bunch of people complaining. the link is http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/5449 if anyone wanted to take a look. but anyways thanks for all the help i guess ill just get a new cpu
I Am Having The Same Problem Instead Of 1gb I Get 512!!!!!
Also Accat13 If Your Laptop Turns Out To Become Like My Computer Then It Meansyour Computer Will Become Really Slow Soon!!!
After 512mb Started Showing Up 3-4 Weeks Later My Computer Got Super Slow....like A Chain Reaction.
well I've never actually had a laptop so I'm not sure about the process for adding/removing ram from it. But when you unscrewed it did you have to get any screws that were under stickers or anything like that?
If you have switched the ram sticks around and have tried each one in both of the slots, and one slot does not register the ram consistently, your problem is with the motherboard, not the ram. You are stuck with a single slot, but you could buy a 512 stick of ram and put it in that single slot. Best bet is to go to the Crucial Memory (or Kingston or whatever) web site and see what memory options you have for your make and model of laptop.
