My computer mother board says it supports up to 1.5gb of ram and today I installed 2 512's and a 128 which equals out to 1.12gb and my computer is running fine. Is there any harm on doing this?
My processor is 999mhz and my ram is 1.12gb. HAHA!
if its running fine...i wouldnt think so.... are the RAM sticks the same?

other than the amount of ram, yes its the same type of ram.
I think u got gb confused with ghz and thought you had 1.12ghz ram compared to your 999mhz cpu.. yes?Quote:

2.0ghz althon xp 2400 cpus cost $70. cheaper than 512mb DDR Ram that's got a high mhz.

a friend of mine had a problem when he used 1 512mb stick and a 128.... he had to remove the 128 for the system to work properly.... seems that his computer was restarting often....
but if ur running fine...then ur fine :D

that 128 was broke or shorted. :angry: Same thing happend to my friend's Geforce FX 5200 (heh it worked, but restarted like all the time). I talked to him on the phone while he was playing an online rpg called Raganok or something.. then it restarted on him and he was like... AWW Dammit! I probably got killed by some pk'r now.Quote:

BTW that friend was me, what happened is that i have 2 128 sticks and 1 512 but when i put them together the machine becomes crazy and doesnt recognize the 768MB i have to remove one 128 stick in order to make it work... <_< <_<

Ok after turning off my computer and restarting a couple of times to make sure its working properly I have found that after my system boots and is running it will remain running fine without any problems. But some times I turn on the computer and it gets to the windows xp boot screen and frezzes at that spot. Then I just keep restarting untill it lets me into windows then its fine there on. is this a problem I can fix or is this a problem I cant fix but is ok .
Since nobody replied last post i guess ill try again but with another problem. When I have the full 1.12 gb of ram in my computer my mouse stops responding and my ethernet turns off/stops working. Could my memory have something to do with it. and one more thing,if I took my 128mb stick out and just left the 2 512s in there would I be able to tell the performance decrease?

I'm not an expert by any means, but if removing the third memory stick solves the problem then that's what I'd do.
I GB of RAM should be plenty for most applications and I doubt that you'd see any difference.

1 gig of ram is more than enough unless u do any heavy graphics or video work then you are fine. It also means you can disable the page files on ur hdd this will improove system performance though you will notice a slight increase in ram usage but with 1gig of it who cares...

I've tried that and didn't notice any difference.
FreeRamXP Pro bitched like crazy with no page file though.

My supposition is even though some mobos have 3 banks for RAM. They only accept & recognize 2.
I don't know if it still holds true but computers normally want MATCHED pairs
All these tweak progs are bodge jobs anyway, they use shortcuts that are just lame to optimise stuff.
You wont notice much improovement in normal applications but try running some games.
AvP2 and Everquest love it with no page file since it means the hdd has to do less work and the ram is way faster than the hhd currently.
You only really need to use the pagefile when you run outta ram but windows likes to page stuff to hdd even when there is plenty of free ram and since no general use programs require 1gig of ram there is no need for a page file.
it will also increase the life of ur hdd since its doing less work and by writing to the same section of disc over and over will cause degredation

What programs set up a ram drive and what is the advantage.
Actually, Clocker, I don't know if you can still do it, I'll need to research. We once used a driver, Ramdrive.sys, to load progs into RAM. You'd load Ramdrive.sys through config.sys [device=ramdrive.sys], it would then show up as a drive.
Windows 95 and 98 use them to install.

That's it Clocker, but I'm not sure if you can do it with XP.
The progs we used were small by todays standards, and copied to the hard disk, as opposed to installing, as now. This meant you could just copy the whole prog into the ram drive. Of course, when you turn the comp off, you lose it all. Todays progs have to be installed, so info is put, most times, in the registry. If you just copy a prog into your ram drive, which has it's own drive letter, the info in the registry would be pointing to the wrong location. You would need to install to the ramdrive each time.
But as I say, I'm not sure if you can use them in XP.

Yes you can do it in XP but i think you are limited to using 32meg of system ram only. ill check on that
According to Clocker's link, there's a way round the 32mb limit.

If you want to extensively test your RAM, use MemTest86 to test it. Try it with and without the 128MB stick, and you'll be able to tell whether it's dodgy.

I am going to run mem test while I am sleeping because it takes a little while.
Try running the Memtest with just the 128 meg stick in. You will speed up the testing process.

OMG! I started memtest last night and when I woke up it was still going so I just let it run untill now. I went ahead and left both my 512s in to see how many errors I would get. When I stoped the test it had found 471,300 errors in my memory :( and it was on test 11 and was 95% pass. Is there anything that I can do to fix my ram or anything. Is that a lot of errors for 2 512mb sticks of ram.
Here is what it said about my bad ram. Bad Ram = 0x20828000,0x218e0000,0x20000004,0x20804000,0x21088040,0x202d0008,0x29014000
Any Ideas?

No I tested both of them at the same time. Is there anyway to fix it .
If there is one error reported in MemTest86, that's a problem.
Try running your RAM at failsafe timings. If that doesn't help, test each stick individually. And if you still get errors in one or more sticks, the faulty sticks will need replaced.
