Running a p4 200gh 512ram ddr pc2100 ATI 9700 pro. Tryed o/c with rage 3d . I can't see a big change really. I have the newest drivers. ect. Only difference was my refresh rate on my monitor.Games look fine can play ones I couldn't before tho But im missing something? Running at core 351 .oo mhz, memory 321.75mhz . Should I just go for broke? and o/'c till I can see a problem? MOTHERBOARD 35c CPU 45C TEMPS
I had 64mg video on board before looked good to me

keep overclocking little amount then go into a game for a while and see if you get artifacting (little dots and lines coming off of stuff on the screen). once that happens you know youve goten to the limit so just go back down a few mhz until it runs fine.
Oh ok thanks Rossco have tryed bench marks but it's all chinese to me B)
What were you trying to run that a 9700 pro couldnt handle? Halo in 1600x1200, 6XAAF? :blink:
I didn't say I couldn't handle anything I was just wondering that I cant really see a difference in games that I could play before on my old onboard 64 mg thats all. what games are you playing? next time you go to play something go into the display options and turn everyhting up to the highest details possible, make sure aa and af are up to full, and use a realy high resolution, somehting like 1024x768 or higher.
I'm playing at 1024x768 mabye its fine I was expecting more? My little ones are happy tho. I think I'm just new and was expecting more ! Thank you Rossco :)

What were you expecting? The only diff from one card to another is how many FPS it can put out really. The better the card the more FPS it will have and can also handle more filtering to make it look better. If you get a really good card its not gona shoot money outa your screen every once in a while. If games you played on your 64MB card work the same on the 9700Pro, the games probobly arent graphicly demanding. Run some benchmarks and you will see a BIG difference lol.

Believe me, I understand the compulsion.
But you are talking software modding and I prefer hardware modding myself.
Besides, after killing my vid card a few weeks ago I am leery of them.
Not only that, video cards generate a lot of heat and have only marginal cooling capabilities out of the box.
Maybe you could stay busy improving that...

why don't u set ur speeds to ur vid crd to default and test it with 3dmark01. then overclock it to ur liking (maybe what it's set at now) and bench mark it again with 3dmark01. that is a perfect way to find out if it's doing anything or not.Quote:

Apparently you had no difficulty actually OCing the card.
After the successful OC you couldn't see a difference.
So what were you expecting?
AFAIK there are two major reasons to overclock anything.
1. Just to see if you can.
2. To improve performance.
Obviously you could.
No performance benefit.
Hence, the lukewarm response.
9700 pro is fast as is.. your not gonna make it run like a 9800 pro/xt
Ok, look at my card speeds. My 3DMark03 only went up like almost 400 points. Aquamark went up 3000 and 3Dmark01 went up like 1000. Those speeds are alot faster, is that all the improvment i should see in benches?
Even though I know I'll get LOTS of bad replies for what I'm gonna say.... benchies don't say what a computer can and cannot. If the app (game) runs fine with this and that turned on (left out on purpose), why do scores matter?
Just play the games and have fun :)

DWK; what you should narrow down is the methodology of a particular benchmark and what the scoring criteria are before you make such a generalization.Quote:

I particularly like the Aquamark3 benchmark. Why? For many reasons.
I like the fact that the krass engine uses DX7, DX8, and DX9 textures whose performance is a function of the GPU's pixel and vertex shaders. If you run the benchmark, you are able to see your graphics card stressed out in different situations which integrate all three types of textures.
Therefore you can see where your card performs better and where it lags. The great thing about the comparison links is the fact that it details maximum, minimum, and average frames per second, which denote strengths and weaknesses of a card in a particular scene/environment.
I suggest you upgrade someday soon to a modern GPU which features pixel and vertex shaders so you could contribute to this discussion. I only say this to emphasize the fact the Aquamark3 and other such rigorous benchmarks test the performance of these elements of modern graphics hardware---not "value segment" hardware.

That is great big dawg. That means that, on average, a typical DX9 game that uses DX7, DX8, DX8.1, and DX9 pixel and vertex shaders will run 3 frames per second faster than without the overclocking. Those performance differences are impressive---especially considering the fact that it was a free* performance increase.
Oh, and big dawg, I am not sure you have reached your maximum overclocks either...in other words, you might be able to bring up those scores a lot more. :D

Wrong. Scores don't tell you how much anisotropic filtering (or aa or fsaa if you want to include here) your card can handle. The actual performance is what lets you know if you can handle them. For example - it doesn't matter how much I overclock my mx440 (plus - hypothetically - getting better scores), it still won't handle "good" AF or FSAA.Quote:

Regarding your 1-4 paragraphs, I totally agree. My point being is, MOST (yes....MOST) of players do not care about scores in benchies (and I'm not saying this is good). Regarding your last paragraph, I'm not even gonna comment on this. It is obviously hard to get a mod to erradicate this type of behavior (specially on HW world). I'm not even interested in whether you keep thinking that I don't know about cards (old AND new) or not. I simply won't waste my time trying to argue in a matter like this.

I was just saying the higher your score the more filtering you can put on it and the less it will strain it probably...and the higher your score the longer you will be able to play games.
Actually, I've been looking for a card for about 4 months. They are still too expensive here. A friend of mine just bought (yesterday) an fx5600 256ddr (an MSI card), and it cost him $180.
I keep looking though :smilie4:

Adam, what did you mean in your previous post about how I could bring my scores up alot more?
If I could unlock my CPU, I could go alot higher prob. But like..ok
It lets me change the multiplier and the FSB...but it just doesnt read it right under system...its really wierd. :unsure:
