if i switched my corsair ram and put back my old samsung infineon ram (same specs as my corsair), would i still be able to oc to 3.2? i'll prob put ram sinks or heatspreaders on it. can it take 2.85V?
if i do this, i end up saving $116

Why are you increasing vdimm?
If your memory is rated at 3200 you should be able to run it at 3200 with standard vdimm. You only need to increase it if you are overclocking the memory.
So you should be able to save even more money by not buying these <s>blankets</s> heat spreaders.
pc3200 is 400mhz, but divide by 2, and u get the RAM part in the FSB:RAM ratio. so if my FSB is at 266 (3.2 gig), i'd have to set the ratio to 5:4 or 3:2. 3:2 is the worst, and to get it to run at 5:4, i need to raise VDIMM or else it's not stable. running my current ram at stock vdimm will cause it to crash
How come you're swapping out RAM that is working fine and how do you save $116 by doing so?
 becasue he'll send it back saying it insnt working.Quote:

I was watching the TV the other day and this add comes on for something and they were saying
"EVERYTHING IS ON SALE, THE MORE YOU BUY THE MORE YOU SAVE"
Not really related to anything, but that reply made me think of that add
Abu, are you really going to RMA the Corsair?
This is turning into a very bad habit.
The legitimate return of defective merchandise is fine, but claiming that perfectly good stuff is bad and then forcing a retailer to take it back ultimately drives up the cost of goods for everybody.
Retailers don't eat the cost of defective merchandise...they pass it on to us, the end user.
Say it ain't so, Abu.
He may be ebaying it, but still, if he is returning it thas just wrong. As you rightly mention, its the customers that get the prices pushed up from people returning stuff just to get their money back. :angry:Quote:

Why dont you make up your mind? You never seem to be able too...
Whyd you buy the corsair if the other stuff works fine?
why dont you try it out? if it does work then keep the samsung, if not then keep the corsair. there is no harm with just trying it out.

if i sell the samsung, i only get between $60-$80. but if i sell the corsair, i get $100-110. plus, the samsung did come with my original system. not sure if that's a bonus, but still.
and with the $116, i'm might sell my 9600 and get myself a 9800 pro for 212 at newegg

oh ic now.
just ran 2 benchies, and noticed significant decrease in scores. that sucks. but my vd card is at stock, and the benches in my sig are when my 9600 is oced. but a 9800pro oced to 9800xt with as5 will drown out the minor crappiness with my ram.
looks good. now, i need to get some heatspreaders or sinks.
This should be interesting...Quote:

yes it should, i agree the fact with you clocker about the heat spreaders, but i beleive that ramsinks will work.
also abu, you have some serious ethical problems if you were even thinking of rma'ing it, and if you did rma the other stuff.

i didn't rma anything. everything i have i sold on ebay. besides, newegg won't even let me rma my ram.
so i have no ethical issues. ok, maybe some, but not in this area
So you found out they won't RMA the RAM?Quote:
i can't rma the ram. just checked. they only let you exchange. arg.
If you found this out by asking then you had the intention to RMA it.
Isn't just having the intention is an ethical issue?
Why not sell both and get some PC4000 memory?
Forget about those comfort blankets you call heat spreaders.
newegg really doesnt love much money on this btw, alot of times they check it out, see that its fine, and either send it right back to you (this has been done to some people) or they will send you a similar stick now, and put your stick in the refurb section.
I think after 30 days the money back part of the warranty goes away, so now you could probably only get a replacement anyway.
Also, go ahead and sell the corsair if you are going to run your machine at its current specs, and the corsair wont run any higher than the infienion ram.
PS: Btw, does the corsair run at a 3 latency at that level?
PPS: also, nice OC on that samsung ram.
thanks. well, the samsung ram's stock is 3-4-4-8. the corsair is 2.5-4-4-8. not much difference. my comp is very stable. ran 5 continous 3dmark03's and still working fine.Quote:

wat do u mean both?? u mean the ram and vd card? y? it's running fine now. but with a 9800pro easily flashed to xt, i'm settled for bout 3-4 years. and wat's gonna increase my benchies more, the ram or the vd card? i'd say the vd cardQuote:

No. I think he means the Samsung and the Corsair.Quote:

oh. still, i'd still get better vd card. cuz there's no way that my 9600 will outperform a 9800 pro, but even my samsung ram is doing just as well as pc4000 on 875Quote:

That should have a better chance of keeping you going for 3-4 years. Overclocking memory is not a good idea, it may be stable at the moment, but I can almost guarantee that won't be the case for long. You can remove the heat from the surface all you like, but there will be a weak spot somewhere and the high frequencies will seek it out,
Remember that processors are designed for very high frequencies. They may become unstable but they wont usually break down. Memory on the other hand is pretty much on the edge of stability at the frequencies used, it can and will break down if you abuse it.
In 20 years I can only remember a two processor failures out of hundreds (under normal use) but I have seen plenty of ram failures in the same period under the same conditions.
so ur saying a pc4000 won't have these faults? ;)Quote:

I thought you said you were overclocking your ram, that's why your vdimm was 1.85V (I notice you've changed that now).
You would not be overclocking PC4000 ram so you would not be overstressing it. Consequently it should last the course.
Ethical issues again.

it will have the faults but since you are running it at lower than 4000 speeds it will be fine.
i'm not the only one. besides, i called them, and they told me that they'll still replace it if the ram is oced. mostly cuz they don't bother to check. i've done it once already. the stupid tech guy told me that my ram was bad, when it was actually good.Quote:

wat's wrong with my ethical issues?
i remember a quote from some dude: "No one ever got rich being morally correct"
i don't live by that, but it's certainly a good point
But the rest of us have to pay for it?
Being rich is not the only goal in life.
pay for wat? i'm not returning it. i'm selling it to someone else. wats wrong in that? and its not like i'm selling something broken and saying its brand new. the buyer would get good quality stuff.Quote:
