just wentto install mandrake 10rc1 and after it partitioned and formated my disk it came up could not find kernel, and a couple of other things and i cant do anything. :huh: can anyone help?

Try booting from the install cd and type in: linux rescue at the boot prompt. That may or may not give you a shell, if it does then try this:
/sbin/mkbootdisk -2.x.x. Where x is the version fo your kernel. To find the version of your current kernel type in uname -v It will by default use /dev/fd0 (floppy) to write the boot image to. Then exit from the shell and try booting from the floppy.
The boot prompt from the cd will look like this of course:

thsi is my first linux install so there is no previous install.
i just boot using the graphical install. with no other options.
and when using the install interface after it formats the partitions and is baout to go onto installing it comes up could not find kernel, and a list of things to do with that.

But since there is nothing of significance on it I would just reinstall if I were you.
And take in mind your trying to use a beta.
thats\what im trying to do ands thats when it comes up the kernel error.

The one on your install disk or the one from a finished installation?
from the install disk, when im trying to install it. :huh:
the actual error is Internal Error: no kernel availabile.
then MDK: and some thing to do with the error, cant remember anything of it.
Sounds like corrupted media. You can try burning another, or you can try installing 9.2 and waiting until 10 comes out of beta and then upgrade. :)

me too, gonna take about 8hrs to get the iso's and ill have a go tomorrow and hopefully that will work. :D
jesus, just as im burning the 9.2 iso, i check the mandrake site and they've released 10-community to the public ftps,. :angry:

Bollocks!!! the 9.2 cd doesnt even get that far, it comes up a fatal error and couldnt continue whne checking the pcmcia bus etc.
gonna get the 10-community and check that,
i was in abit of a hurry burning the 9.2 disks, mighta missed something.

If not you can press F1 at the boot prompt when the cd boots and there should be an option you can pass to the kernel to disable pcmcia.
yeah, its a laptop, the 10rc1 disk went past that point easyly. :huh:
i'd prefer to have the 10-community version anyway, so im nto gonna muck bout with it the now, i'll have another go tomorrow sometime.
not having much luck here either, 10-comunity doesnt work either. im gonn atry another distro. or see if the mandrake move works.

Your not the only one on the board that has had problems with Mandrake on a laptop. They just do not seem to play well with laptops.
Im pretty sure another distro would work though.
The only thing about Mandrake move is you really cant save your settings unless you have a usb key, or another partition to save it to. But for a laptop that really shouldnt be a problem. :)
oh well. got any recomendations to another distro??? easy install for a newbie.
Fedora seems to be a easy install, a new veresion is going to be released soon, I think its in testing right now but I could be wrong.

jesus, aint having any luck here, i dont htink my laptop likes linux, just tried fedora, and it comes up a kernel panic error when starting the installer. something to do with bank 3
edit. ive found out why none of the buggers work, something to do with my hardware, the pcmcia controlelr i think.
ive manged to get mandrake 10 installing using the noauto bit
