ermmm...dumb question....
hehehe....
why do i hear my psu switching on and off?
like, i'm just sitting here f00kin around on the web, or whatever,
and i hear it switch on and off, but the pc keeps goin....
no shutdown or anything, i just hear that switch....
like the sound it makes when i shut down the pc...
 is it possessed?
 so, why's it do that?
Re: ermmm...dumb question....
Maybe a fan or your hard disk is making noise?
Re: ermmm...dumb question....
I also get quite a loud clicking noise every now and then???
Weird, never have managed to work out what it is?
I don't think it's my hard drive.

nah...
its the switching sound you hear when you shut down, completely,
when everything finally powers down and then you hear your PSU click off
thats the sound its makin (not all the time, just evey once in a while)
damn i wish i had a mic, i would record it :P
Re: ermmm...dumb question....
Apart from the fan stopping (which would be an absence of noise), the PSU does not make any noise when it shuts down. On the other hand, as indicated by VB, the HD most certainly does make a noise as it brakes the disk when shutting down.

well...VB didnt exactly SAY that, but....:P
so i got some bad disc brakes eh?
damn midas fkd me again!
hehe....ok seriously now....
i always thought that was the power supply shutting down,
cause its after everything has powered off...
and i certainly dont wanna think that my HDD is braking during runtime...:(
that cant be good can it?
Re: ermmm...dumb question....
Time to make some backups.

Re: ermmm...dumb question....
ya that's usually the hard drive making teh click noise when u shutdown.
for a brief period about a month or soomething ago I kept getting that same problem except that my whole computer would lock up after the drive came back on...
then it just went away after a while.

awww man....not the old "priorities" speech?
Re: ermmm...dumb question....
Check your "power options" in control panel, it could simply be that it is turning your drive off because the power setting has timed out. Check the same thing in your bios setup too.
If you've got more than one HDD, one of them may power down while the other stays running, in that situation you would not notice any delay unless your program was specifically waiting for data from the stopped drive.
BTW, the brakes only come on after power has been removed. Otherwise you would be waiting ages for the drive to stop. With the new FD bearings they could keep spinning for hours without any power supplied.

See, shoulda used Norton Ghost. :P
Re: ermmm...dumb question....
Not to try and scare you or anything, but if a hard drive often makes clicking noises while it's trying to access data its often a sign it's on it's way out....may just be powering down though.
