Actually, I felt that for an adult to so impose in that particular setting would be a bit gauche, given his generous interaction with the kids.You could have tried the following;

That would have worked.
I desired to handle things with a modicum of grace, rather than elbowing children out of the way for a picture, the only use for which would be to prove at some subsequent juncture that I had indeed met the man.
