When Facebook revealed its revamped messaging feature, complete with email functionality, it also enabled any Facebook user to get an @facebook.com email address. The problem was this had previously been used internally for employees.

Facebook solution was to acquire fb.com to be used internally from then on. As you can expect, a two-letter domain name doesn't come cheap, but Facebook didn't reveal what it paid for it at the time.

Google just fired a broadside in the Web's codec wars.

With its alternative WebM video-encoding technology now entering the marketplace, Google announced plans today to remove built-in Chrome support for a widely used rival codec called H.264 favored by Apple and Microsoft. The move places Google instead firmly in the camp of browser makers Mozilla and Opera, who ardently desire basic Web technologies to be unencumbered by patent restrictions.

Gnutella -- the venerable peer-to-peer file sharing network -- doesn't get as much time in the spotlight today, what with the rise of BitTorrent. It's still around, though, and Android users now have an app which lets them connect to the Gnutella network, search for files, and download directly to their device: DroidG.

Android getting ported to the iPhone may be old news by now, but Android 2.3 (a.k.a. Gingerbread) getting ported to the iPhone? Well, that's something... new, if entirely expected. As before, it's the iPhone 3G doing the honors, and the port is still based on the iDroid project, which means you can hang onto iOS in a dual-boot configuration so you won't be left in the cold when the less-than-stable port decides not to cooperate. And, yes, this once again means that the iPhone has gotten the latest version of Android before many Android devices have. ...

During a press briefing today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Microsoft Windows President Steven Sinofsky revealed some of the company's plans for Windows 8, the next major version of its flagship operating system. One of the most significant revelations is that Microsoft intends to support the energy-efficient ARM architecture alongside x86. Windows 8 will be able to run on SoCs made by Qualcomm, NVIDIA, and TI—opening the door for further Windows growth in the increasingly important mobile and embedded space.

Nvidia, the graphics chipmaker, today announced Project Denver, a plan to use the same chip architecture found in cell phones in high performance computing servers. The move broadens Nvidia’s relationship with ARM, expands its market and puts Nvidia in even more competition with Intel, as well as with startups such as SeaMicro and Calxeda (formerly known as Smooth-Stone). It’s also an indication that energy efficiency is becoming more important in the data center and is another blow for those pushing an x86-centric view of the world.

Firefox has taken the number one spot in browser market share in Europe for the first time, according to a survey by traffic-statistics company StatCounter. The firm’s numbers show that Firefox had just over 38 percent of the European browser market in December, compared with a little less than 37 percent for Internet Explorer. But the real battle for Firefox is with Chrome, the Google browser that continues to gain market share at a fairly rapid pace — most of the decline in IE’s share has come as a result of Chrome’s advances.
