Three of the admins behind The Pirate Bay are all still guilty, a Swedish appeals court decided on Friday, but their jail time has been reduced. Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde, and Carl Lundstrom's prison sentences have all been reduced from the original one year to between 4 and 10 months each, though the trade-off is an increase in damages that they must pay to the music and movie industries.

After a lost legal battle, Mininova was forced to take drastic measures a year ago. The site’s founders removed millions of torrents to avoid having to pay millions of dollars in fines. In addition, new uploads were restricted to approved publishers only, a choice that expectedly dwarfed the site’s traffic and user base in the year that followed.

A new BitTorrent client called zButterfly saw the light this week. Based on the Vuze source code, the new client sets itself apart from the competition by offering a searchable catalog of movies in various qualities. The developers of zButterfly are convinced that the movie centric approach will be appreciated by users, but it’s doubtful that Hollywood will be happy with this latest innovation.

The movie-oriented zButterfly BitTorrent client was released to the public a few days ago after being tested in a private beta for a few weeks. Published under a GNU general public license (GPL), the Open Source client is based on the well known Vuze code, but with some added features that make it stand out from the rest.

uTorrent has long been known for providing a torrent managing client that's light on fancy features but light on your system resources, too. Today's release of uTorrent 2.2 brings out of beta an add-on gallery that the publisher BitTorrent, Inc. has been working on since the spring. The "App Studio," as the company calls it, allows users to customize features on the fly, including adding security from BitDefender, games, social networking, and enhanced content discovery for legally free entertainment.

The free web hosting service GeoCities will be archived (around 900 GB of data) and released on the BitTorrent by Archive Team one year after Yahoo! shut it down.
Launched in 1995, GeoCities was acquired by Yahoo! Four years later for $3.57 billion in stock. The Internet giant shut down the service last year.
"It’s not like Yahoo! had some sort of terrible server failure or something," said the Archive Team. "They in fact had made the active decision to turn off the site called GeoCities, an at-that-point 15 year old hosting site that contained terabytes of user-generated content."

Here’s yet another chapter in the ongoing war (or shall I say E-drama) between the warez scene and torrent sites. Earlier, we saw a SceneNotice revealing names of SysOps and server IP addresses of the popular scene tracker SCC (if you don’t know what a SceneNotice is, read this post). Today, two more sites have been ‘targeted’ by the scene, namely the hugely popular General/0day torrent tracker TorrentLeech and specialized TV torrent site BTN. ...

A new Internet traffic trends report released by the Canadian broadband management company Sandvine reveals that global P2P traffic is expanding, with BitTorrent as the key player. In North America, more than half of all upstream traffic (53.3%) on an average day can be attributed to P2P. The report further signals some really interesting regional differences in P2P use, such as the dominance of Ares in Latin America.

In an interesting post at Memeburn, Tom Foremski points to BitTorrent’s efforts to get rid of the bad rep it has been cast upon it because of the p2p technology it has developed which for many has become equal to illegal file sharing and Internet pirates. In fact, as we have previously underlined in numerous posts, BitTorrent has irreversibly revolutionized the way digital content is distributed and more and more companies are embracing peer-to-peer technology in their business because advantages have become simply irrefutable.

A top movie website has rejected a thriller about a TV crew being hunted in tunnels - and the producers, including Andrew Denton, believe it's because they want to give it away free.
Sydney independent film producer Enzo Tedeschi said he tried five times since June to get the film, The Tunnel listed on the Internet Movie Database, IMDb.com.
But each time it has been rejected and Mr Tedeschi - who has had other films accepted - believes it is because he wants to distribute it through BitTorrent - which is best known for the illegal sharing of movies and music.
