Mozilla Labs this week launched F1, a social plug-in for Firefox to quickly share any webpage link along with a personal comment from the user. For now you can share to Facebook, Twitter and Gmail contacts, but creators Mozilla Messaging say they will add more options in the next round of development.
After a quick install, the F1 icon is displayed in the upper right hand corner of the browser window. Click and a dialogue box appears with options to share to Facebook, Twitter and Gmail. Once you've allowed access to your accounts, it's a simple matter to choose your channel, add a note and post.
Twitter users will appreciate F1's automatic URL shortener using bit.ly. Facebook users will like the fact they can add a comment along with the expected screenshot and brief description.

uTorrent has long been known for providing a torrent managing client that's light on fancy features but light on your system resources, too. Today's release of uTorrent 2.2 brings out of beta an add-on gallery that the publisher BitTorrent, Inc. has been working on since the spring. The "App Studio," as the company calls it, allows users to customize features on the fly, including adding security from BitDefender, games, social networking, and enhanced content discovery for legally free entertainment.

On Monday, mobile phone carriers AT&T and T-Mobile will make available for purchase their first Windows Phone 7-based handsets, just as announced officially last month. AT&T will bring to shelves two such phones, the Samsung Focus and HTC Surround, while T-Mobile will put on sale the HTC HD7.

The launch marks a new beginning for Microsoft on the smartphone market in the US, as the new Windows Phone 7 platform is radically different than the older Windows Mobile OS.

It's been a while since we last heard anything about Chrome OS, Google's lightweight OS based on the open source Chromium OS. However, the rumor mill chugged into action yesterday as reports emerged that vendors will start showing off Chrome OS smartbooks later this month.
It's been nearly a year since Google lifted the curtain on Chrome OS. However, we've seen little of the operating system since then, and over the last few months, discussion about it has quieted down considerably. Bringing the OS back on stage is a Digitimes report that suggests we'll see vendors announcing "smartbooks" running the OS at the end of this month as well as a Google-branded notebook from the search giant itself.

The Fedora development community announced on Tuesday the official release of Fedora 14, codenamed Laughlin. The new version is a bit light on user-facing changes, but adds some useful features for developers. Fedora typically issues a new release every six months and is loosely aligned with the GNOME development cycle. Each release brings updated software and some new packages.

Some finally realize it doesn’t make sense to charge nearly US-style prices in a country with a paltry per capita GDP of $6,600 compared to $46,000 in the US.

The one of the more nerve wracking facets of the war on piracy has long been copyright holders’ insistence on charging prices in a given country that has no bearing in economic reality.
For example, Apple’s iTunes is a global digital music retailer, yet charges customers the same prices regardless of where they live and what they can actually afford. The people of Malawi, which has a per capita GDP of $800, are expected to pony up just as much as the guy from the US where the per capita GDP is $46,000.

When will Microsoft bring Windows 8 to market? 2012's looking like a safe bet -- not only was it slated for that date in an allegedly leaked product roadmap, but Microsoft Netherlands hints that the OS is just two years away. Buried at the bottom of a press release celebrating the first birthday of Windows 7, you'll find the above Dutch phrase, which Google Translate returns as "Furthermore, Microsoft is of course the next version of Windows. But it will take about two years before "Windows 8" on the market." There are certainly plenty of reasons why Microsoft's riskiest product bet might not hit its target date, but the machine translation seems clear. Here's hoping the OS will ship with some suitably futuristic hardware.

Windows, Microsoft’s ubiquitous operating system, sits firmly in place.
One year after launch, licenses for the successor of Windows Vista,Windows 7, have gone over the counter no less than 240 million times.
As Microsoft points out, that makes it the fastest selling operating system in history, which is not super surprising when you consider how many were clamoring to upgrade from Vista, and XP for that matter.
Still, that’s nearly a quarter billion licenses, folks.

The Israel Antiquities Authority and Google are teaming up to publish the Dead Sea Scrolls online.
The approximately 1,000 scrolls, managed by the IAA, were discovered in a series of caves near the Dead Sea in the West Bank. Dating from the second and first centuries, B.C.E., these Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek documents constituted a significant trove of information on the ancient world. And of course, they also contained the seeds of division.
