The PlayStation 3 video game console has received this week a new firmware upgrade, 3.50, which enables 3D Blu-ray playback as well as an array of other things, but also blocks the use of third-party PlayStation 3 controllers, according to a recent report.

As you can imagine, quite a few PS3 users have started complaining, as their controllers didn't register with the console and they weren't able to use it, unless they had an official DualShock 3 controller.

A spokesperson for Sony Ericsson says that the company has no plans to build new Symbian-based smartphones. Much like Motorola, which restored its competitiveness by dropping Symbian and its own in-house Linux effort in favor of Android in 2008, Sony Ericsson appears to be committed to Google's mobile operating system.

Today, Bloomberg reports that the Facebook phone is going to be sold in Europe via Carphone Warehouse and other European carriers. It will be made by INQ, which is a relatively new handset maker that got its start making a Skype phone. In the U.S., INQ is said to be working with AT&T, where the phone is going to be sold under Ma Bell’s brand. Reports say the phone will be sold in two models: a touch screen model and a QWERTY model. We reported on INQ building touch-screen phones earlier in the year.

Much as been made of the so-called Facebook Phone. While Facebook is still being vague about their ideas for this (but at least they’re no longer denying it), it seems likely that anything they do will be based on Google’s Android platform. And INQ may offer the firstof these starting next year. But Facebook isn’t the only web company thinking about phones and Android. Mozilla is as well. Or at least, their community is. Today on the Mozilla Labs blog, they’ve unveiled Seabird, an Android-based concept phone built around the ideals of the Open Web.

As pressure on file-sharing continues to mount, many people are searching for ‘safer’ methods to acquire music. Today we bring news of an application that seems to be almost too good to be true. With a huge database of songs, Mulve delivers music to users’ desktops at amazing speeds at the touch of a button with zero uploading, meaning that “getting caught” is no longer a concern. Question is, how long will it last?

A copy protection scheme used in virtually all consumer HD video devices, from Blu-ray players to game consoles, was broken this week when someone leaked an essential secret key online. The High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) protocol key found its way onto the Internet on Monday, and HDCP vendor Intel has since confirmed its authenticity.
It’s unlikely that this breach will have any immediate impact on either digital media sales or online piracy. However, the defeat of HDCP is yet another instance of supposedly unbreakable content protection schemes failing badly.
Still, people in the industry are holding onto the illusion that there will one day be a secure architecture for digital content, despite of plenty of evidence to the contrary. We’ve compiled a list of five of the most glorious DRM failures over the years:

An iPhone application called "iPA God," which supposedly aids in the distribution of pirated applications, is now up for sale along with its source code. The app, whose name refers to the file extension for iPhone applications (.ipa ), made waves in the hacker community last week, when it was revealed to be the first ever tool for downloading paid applications to your phone that didn't first require you to jailbreak your device. Instead, the app is said to use an exploit found in the latest versions of the iPhone operating system.

Facebook is building a mobile phone, says a source who has knowledge of the project. Or rather, they’re building the software for the phone and working with a third party to actually build the hardware. Which is exactly what Apple and everyone else does, too.It was a little less than a year ago that we broke the news that Google was working on a phone of its own – which was eventually revealed as the Nexus One. It was about that time, says out source, that Facebook first became concerned about the increasing power of the iPhone and Android platforms. And that awesome Facebook apps for those phones may not be enough to counter a long term competitive threat.

Treat all smartphones as uncontrolled endpoints. Smartphone users' identities can be stolen, hacked or inappropriately shared. Smartphones can get lost, stolen or borrowed. Device identification technology uses serial number information to allow organizations to associate a specific smartphone to a specific user. This provides a watermark for the device, and allows IT to remotely disable it and erase all sensitive data.

We were in San Francisco yesterday as Microsoft unveiled the latest beta of Internet Explorer 9 and, like many present, we were impressed. From everything we saw, it was all it was hyped up to be - visually stunning, fast and full-featured. Then came the one, big catch - it's only available for Windows 7.
The Register says that it got the official word from Microsoft and if Internet Explorer 9 is something you want, then Windows XP just isn't going to do.

Want to boost the world's sagging economies? Here's one strategy: if governments reduced the piracy rate for computer software by 2.5 percent each year over the next four, it would stimulate most nations to the tune of $142 billion, add almost half a million new high tech jobs, and produce about $32 billion in new tax revenues by 2013.This assessment comes from the Business Software Alliance's new study: The Economic Benefits of Reducing Software Piracy, which tracks the phenomenon in 42 countries that represent almost the entire global market for software.
