Over the last 36 hours or so, the ‘Anonymous’ masses and many unaffiliated sympathizers joined forces to attack the MPAA’s website. Continuing with ‘Operation Payback’, today an attack will be launched on the RIAA. The ultimate in decentralized protests will go ahead and there’s not a lawyer or police force in the world who can do anything about it. Is this the protest of the future?

Facebook is building a mobile phone, says a source who has knowledge of the project. Or rather, they’re building the software for the phone and working with a third party to actually build the hardware. It was about that time, says out source, that Facebook first became concerned about the increasing power of the iPhone and Android platforms. And that awesome Facebook apps for those phones may not be enough to counter a long term competitive threat.

An eagle-eyed Engadget reader was surfing the Best Buy shelves when he noticed this $50 card -- and sure enough, Intel websites confirm -- that lets you download software to unlock extra threads and cache on the new Pentium G6951 processor.

Google has just confirmed that it fired one of its engineers for violating internal security policies, effectively confirming a Gawker report that detailed how former employee David Barksdale had used his clearance to access private data of multiple people, including four minors. Barksdale has been dismissed for the offense, and Google says that it is "significantly increasing the amount of time we spend auditing our logs to ensure those controls are effective".

We were in San Francisco yesterday as Microsoft unveiled the latest beta of Internet Explorer 9 and, like many present, we were impressed. From everything we saw, it was all it was hyped up to be - visually stunning, fast and full-featured. Then came the one, big catch - it's only available for Windows 7.
The Register says that it got the official word from Microsoft and if Internet Explorer 9 is something you want, then Windows XP just isn't going to do.

Want to boost the world's sagging economies? Here's one strategy: if governments reduced the piracy rate for computer software by 2.5 percent each year over the next four, it would stimulate most nations to the tune of $142 billion, add almost half a million new high tech jobs, and produce about $32 billion in new tax revenues by 2013.This assessment comes from the Business Software Alliance's new study: The Economic Benefits of Reducing Software Piracy, which tracks the phenomenon in 42 countries that represent almost the entire global market for software.
