My ISP shares connection with my cable via fiber optic. This means there is literally no way for them to tell how much bandwidth I am using. Some weekends I download more than 100 GBs. Until they figure something else out for fiber optic this is the wild west of bandwidth.

Actually it is quite factual. Just because you haven't heard of such a setup doesn't mean it doesn't exist. However I don't blame you for being doubtful, it is something that would be uncommon. I regularly download 400-500 gigs a month and I have been known to download over 700 gigs in a single month, however that involved using a combination of Bittorent and usenet over multiple computers. I wouldn't lie about such a thing just to impress some people I don't even know, as I'm sure some losers out there do...I just thought fellow filesharers would be interested since we are on the topic of bandwidth.

Here's how it works :
I have an ISP called Telus. In Canada they are one of the biggest service providers, and also provide phone and cable services. They have this technology using fiber optic ( not available in remote areas ) that delivers high speed internet. They also use they same fiber optic ( " tunnel " if you will ) to transfer cable broadcasts to your home. Any televisons using this in your home would also use " bandwidth " even if you had 3 or 4 T.Vs like some people do. There is no way to tell " bandwidth " from your T.V or your laptop. They don't know if you are being a download hog or just using multiple devices. If I only had their internet then they would be able to monitor my bandwidth, but since I have my cable connection sharing the same fiber optic connection they cannot differentiate.

So...er.. yes, it really is the wild wild west of bandwidth .

I'm betting that CATV stream is carried over a discrete wavelength on that fiber, with your data on another. If it's a packet switched network and your packets are traversing someone else's routers and switches you bet your ass they know whose whats are going where.

You could be right, but I don't know how else to explain this blatant abuse of bandwidth month after month for the last two years with no letters or emails from my ISP. Could it be they are just letting me slide because I am such a good customer ? I get my cable, internet and phone from them. The sharing bandwidth scenario I have given you was explained to me from someone that works for my ISP in the sales department. But of course, that doesn't mean he is correct.

This sounds more like reality. My cable and internet come in together, and I know they realize how much I use- they've mentioned it to me a couple of times...

Think of it as you getting what you pay for. 500GB/mo on fiber doesn't seem excessive. Doubly so if your traffic is asymmetrical. If they're overselling the infrastructure, fuck it--ride it til the wheels fall off. Or at least until they notify you ala megabyteme.
