like piercerseth said, they can tell the difference. fiber uses wavelength multiplexing to send data over separate channels on the same fiber by using varying wavelengths. besides, copper cable only has one channel and they still can tell the difference between tv and internet bandwidth.There is no way to tell " bandwidth " from your T.V or your laptop. They don't know if you are being a download hog or just using multiple devices. If I only had their internet then they would be able to monitor my bandwidth, but since I have my cable connection sharing the same fiber optic connection they cannot differentiate.
So...er.. yes, it really is the wild wild west of bandwidth .
