If you want to make a thread about something go ahead, the worst that can happen is some dry-snitch will get it merged, but even then you can still discuss the movie (or whatever the topic is). The search function is only so useful because some people title threads like "OMG this film will rawk!!111" when talking about, say, Stealth leaving the search function quite useless if checking to see if you are thread-duplicating.*
