The International- Clive Owen, Naomi Watts.

I'm a fan of Owen's (see: Inside Man or Children of Men) and Watts (anyone who wasn't impressed that she could survive Skull Island in a diaphanous nightgown with nary a nip slip just don't know good actressin'), so I was looking forward to this film.

Sadly, it's a meh.
Workmanlike, almost pedestrian, thriller about a crooked bank doing bad things- one would think this film might resonate more given today's headlines but no, it really doesn't.
Can't quite put my finger on it.

Even the much hyped shootout at the Guggenheim was a letdown.*

Probably OK fare for late night TV...if it comes on, watch it.
Much like Law & Order, you'll be entertained without being absorbed...go ahead, fold the laundry, glance at a magazine, you can pick up the story later because you know what's coming and how it's going to get there.

Too bad.

*This scene reminded me of something and it took a few days to figure out what it was.
Oh yeah, the lobby scene in The Matrix.
Now there was three minutes of sheer fuck-em-up ridiculous fun.
Slo-mo bullet casings falling, absurd gymnastics and whole quarries worth of exploding granite...looks like everyone had a blast visualizing and executing this scene.

Nothing politically correct about it...two good guys (Neo and Trinity), dozens of bad guys (everybody else) and no worries about collateral damage.
The Guggenheim shootout in The International on the the other hand, was filled with "innocent bystanders" who even the bad guys took care to miss.
When you're firing AK-47s on full auto- holding them like pistols, no less- and not one bystander gets riddled with lead...well, even Keanu running up walls and backflipping seems more believable.
And that's a problem The International never overcomes.

I remember that movie. It made no sense whatsoever but it had a song on the soundtrack that I really liked ( can't remember what it was though).

For some reason I always put this movie together with it http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092272/

Nothing alike in plot but both are from the same time starring actors who were once teen heartthrobs who are now starring in successful TV series and both have really unexpected casts .But I think the main reason I equate the two is they both contained songs that I really liked but can't remember.
Keanu Reeves is in Youngblood .Pretty much his first real movie.Cool huh?

(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092272/)@Clocker Clive Owen appears to be going downhill at an alarming rate but me heart Naomi Watts (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092272/)( even when she is totally wasted as was the case here)

Double feature time, subset :"Buddy Films".

Decided to go with some classics- in fact, possibly the godfather(s) of all modern buddy flicks...Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting.

Both films star Hollywood royalty, Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

Butch Cassidy is the funnier of the two ("Who are those guys?"), while The Sting has better production values* and a cleverer script.
The chemistry between Newman and Redford is effortless and immediately compelling...watch either/both to see old Hollywood at it's zenith.

BC & TSK has the legendarily boneheaded musical interlude but this is offset by the presence of the impossibly ripe Katharine Ross (typically described at the time as "girl next door" although I've never seen any girls in my neighborhood who looked like that).

The Sting not only features a great turn by Robert Shaw as the villian you love to hate ("Ya fallah?") but the whole cast is comprised of Hollywood stalwarts contributing their best.

I highly recommend both films.

*In particular, Butch Cassidy's sound design drove me nuts.
I don't know whether it was technical limitations or what but all of the dialogue sounded like it had been rerecorded in a room instead of outdoors (where most of the film takes place) and the horse's hoofbeats sounded like obvious Foley work.
I'm usually not that aware of these things but it really jumped out at me this time.

The Black Knight is a movie starring Martin Lawrence in which an American American amusement park employee is transported back to medieval times(Black Knight get it?)Kind of an erstwhile A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.

Total Lord of the Rings rip off ( the books not the movies as it predates them by a good 15 years) but I enjoyed it as well.
Warwick Davis who played Willow was also the Ewok "Wicket" in Lucas' Return of the Jedi( Also the evil Leprechaun in the series of the same name and Professor Filius Flitwick in the Harry Potter movies for that matter).
Other trivia the two leads Joanne Whalley and Val Kilmer fell in love shooting Willow ended up getting married ( though now divorced) and have two kids.

Against my better judgment watched Friday the 13th (2009) .Gutless, cynical film making at it's worst.

Aside from the fact that I don't know why anyone would find entertaining a movie where the only thing that actually takes place is people being mindless butchered , the film was poorly acted(Jared Padalecki's idea of looking determined is to furrow his brow as much as possible) ,poorly directed ( if you are going to make a slasher movie at least have the balls to not pussy out on the grossness even ubertool Eli Roth knows that much .Nispel couldn't even shoot the sex scene right for crying out loud .God save me from music video hacks.Enough with the jump cuts and stupid angles already.Focus on something for more than 5 seconds at a time you useless stupid fucking retard. ) and even more poorly written( I know that it is tradition for horror movies but does everyone have to do the stupidest or least plausible things possible?) Look Jason is after me I guess I will hide under the dock the one place he can actually reach me .Or Jason after brutally killing everyone else that crosses his path suddenly decides to just rough Padalecki up a bit . Not once but twice mind you .

1.5 out of 5 but my own fault for wanting to fit in with the cool kids really.

The Exorcist .It was on TV and I hadn't seen it for a while.

I had forgotten how effectively William Friedkin built things up. Beginning with an initial presentation of the mundane and then slowly allowing the undercurrents of evil to seep in.
In horror movies patience is always a virtue.Too much too quick and no matter what you throw in everything after is just a plateau with no place else to go.

Also the lack of music instead of being a negative actually made everything seem more real and only added to the dread ( no Pavlovian tricks needed here) .

Not a perfect movie but still worth a 10/10 as it stands imo as the greatest horror movie ever ( although The Shining and Ju-on both run it close). and I was pretty much forced to rate it better than Terminator Salvation

Going to download and watch A Man for All Seasons today.Definitely the best movie not on iMDBs top 100 and the one that perhaps had the greatest impact on my life.( To understand the title is to know why).

What a coincidence.

AMFAS is the better film but the chemistry (and repartee) between O'Toole and Hepburn is absolutely amazing.

That is a coincidence and also strange that we both think that A Man For All Seasons is the better film of the two as most people think the opposite.

I don't really have a clear perspective on which is of greater merit as a work of movie art because viewing the movie and appreciating the underlining theme of AMFAS ( that you don't only choose to the right thing when it is easy to do so- a man for all seasons get it? )in part helped shaped the way that I try to live my life.

That and ( really obscure cross- referencing pop culture humour ) I like Al Stewart.

The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen).

I remember the impact this film had when it first came out (and no, I'm not Catholic) and was somewhat ambivalent about rewatching it.

Recently came upon this version- essentially a super "director's cut"- and decided to give it a shot.
What a difference 35 years makes.

Compared to today's movies, this, one of the modern era's classic horror films, is decidedly low key.
It takes it's time setting up the story, in fact, the first third of the film is somewhat disjointed, as three separate threads slowly come together.
As the stories begin to align and the movie gains steam, Friedkin the director still lets the payoffs come slowly, which only emphasizes their power.

Parodied to death in the intervening decades- who doesn't immediately think "Pea soup!"- the special effects were state of the art for the time and still raise hackles.

And then there is the iconic music.
Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells- still one of my favorite pieces of music- is inescapably tied to this film, although it is only used for maybe less than a minute during the runtime.

This film is a classic, well worth the time.

Streets of Fire (Walter Hill, 1984)

For a director noted for making movies with a hard edge Streets of Fire is both surprisingly entertaining escapist fare and a truly a one of a kind film. Self described as "a Rock 'n Roll fable" but really more an erstwhile companion piece to Hill's The Warriors

SoF is set in a place that is purposely artificial and populated by the kinds of characters that could only exist in movies but director Hill still succeeds in drawing you in and, through action more than word , give you a real rooting interest in what transpires.
Hill further uses ahead of it's time , MTV-style editing and willingness to let the soundtrack enhance the action ( a fusion of propulsive pop music and very mobile camera ) to create a swirl of cinematic momentum that doesn't pause for breathe until after the closing credits.

Add to that a seriously thrilling climatic mano a mano between the hero and Willem Dafoe's ( in only his second real role) inspired villain and you have a pretty damn good time waster.

Also few actors conveyed the sense of just standing there extreme cool that Michael Pare's Tom Cody conveys here.

Brilliantly shot if too light weight for greatness .

I actually liked Galaxy Quest a lot. Managed to be a sendup and pretty exciting at the same time. Very hard to accomplish that. Course it always helps to have some great actors ( Tim Allen notwithstanding) helping out.

Yeah. Most comedies go for 2 hours of laugning. No ordinary person does that. Here there was a story. A funny one but still it was not laughs all the time.

PS: The effects were cool and the bad guys really looked great!

Julia (2008)- Tilda Swinton.

Swinton plays Julia, a totally fucked up alcoholic who manages to get involved in a harebrained kidnapping which gets even worse with her involvement.

Swinton either has absolutely no ego or a monumentally giant confidence in herself...either way, she plays Julia as a completely wretched person who you dislike even more as the movie progresses.

Julia would be well paired with Monster for a master class watching two horrible women brought to vivid, uncompromised life.

If you like old school ghost stories try, if you haven't already, The Haunting ( the original although the remake isn't bad) The House on Haunted Hill ( original again remake is more an incoherent spatterfest), The Legend of Hell House ,The Innocents ( there was a sort of sequel to this but I can't remember what the name of it was .Coolest house and treehouse ever in it though .Wait got it The Nightcomers ) , or Thirteen Ghosts ( again the original again the remake sucks supremely)

Leatherheads- George Clooney, Renee Zellwegger and John Krasinski.

This film is Clooney's directoral debut and he doesn't embarrass himself.
A pleasant enough "little" movie, it tells the tale of professional football just as it's on the cusp of becoming a national sport.

No robots, no explosions and no boobs.
Lots of Clooney channeling his Ocean's Eleven good guy rogue persona.
Lots of Krasinski working his way into big screen stardom and lots of Renee, well...being Renee.

An easy way to kill a few hours without getting bombarded with CGI or having to think much.

IdolEyes787

Actually his directorial debut was 2002's Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, a film proposing that Chuck Barris ( of Gong Show fame ) was a CIA assassin (look for bit part by then girlfriend Krista Allen. I only mention that because she's so frickin' hot )

For his next film , Good Night and Good Luck , he was nominated for an Oscar . (He lost to Ang Lee for Brokeback Mountain but Paul Haggis was robbed ).

Btw Clooney also lost for screenplay that year but could console himself with best supporting actor win for Syriana ( besides the rich , famous , good looking, Krista Allen bit of course ).

The Iron Giant.

This is definately one of the forgotten gems. Truly an animated movie both adults and kids will enjoy. It's funny, but never over the top. It's sad at a certain part but has a happy ending. The fact that it's happening dring the cold war will only be important to adults, so they can get a little more from the movie, but the kids won't be bored ither.

IMDB does it justice also, 8/10.

Leon: The Professional- Natalie Portman, Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, Danny Aiello.

A truly touching love story about a professional hit man and a 12 year old girl.
Portman and Reno are terrific, Oldman and Aiello play the characters they've come to personify (when was the last time Oldman played anyone remotely human?) and the story is clever and unexpected (at least till the final scenes).

Blow- Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz.

The (mostly) true story of George Jung, the man who basically invented the American cocaine trade.
A fascinating and well made film that traces the rise of coke in America as personified by Jung, brought to well rounded and sympathetic life by Depp.

These two films bring a touching humanity to two polar opposite criminals, one an efficient "cleaner", the other a super dealer who was in the right place at the right time.
A great double feature.

A riddle. What do you get when you mix 2 hours of non-stop bad acting by incredibly unappealing people with ( in lieu of a plot) a string of ear shattering yet pointless explosions and cringe-worthy lines delivered without the merest hint of humour? G.I Joe:Rise of Cobra.

To paraphrase a line from a movie of actual worth " To call it garbage would be an insult to garbage".
In fact I think that they included the word rise in the title just to hint that even the studio realized that the movie was risible.

Would have given it a zero but Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols in tight leather are worth a star each.

Seriously.

Directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Great Expectations). Movie cover, sadly, describes it all. It is nothing more than that. It isn’t even that. Direction is good, but the story goes nowhere. No interesting questions are answered. The film is not interested in truth, but only distortion and violence.

Very big disappointment.

2001: A Space Odyssey.
Treated myself to a Blu-Ray player for my b-day on Friday and I knew I had to watch this baby in 1080p.
Needless to say it was an amazing experience. My favorite movie ever was even better in HD!

The Brothers Bloom- Adrien Brody, Rachel Weisz, Mark Ruffalo. Directed by Rian Johnson (Brick).

I am officially in love with Rachel Weisz.

A modern version of The Sting with more uncertainty and a bigger emotional payoff.
A great supporting cast, including Robbie Coltrane and Rinko Kikuchi.
One of the most enjoyable films I've seen in a long while, I don't understand why this movie didn't get a wider release.

Hunt it down and watch it.

Public Enemies- Johnny Depp, Christian Bale.

The early 1930's were the heyday of classic American crime with Bonny and Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson and most notably, John Dillinger all running wild at the same time.
Public Enemies focuses on Dillinger and has an outstanding cast, exquisitely detailed period sets (even using one of Dillinger's actual cars) and an intrinsically fascinating story.

I was bored to death, and I blame director Michael Mann.
Heavy handed and striving for his trademark epic sweep, Mann fails to evoke any interest in a cast of characters all larger than life.

I don't know exactly why I was so disappointed except to compare Public Enemies to what I consider to be the gold standard of gangster flicks...Goodfellas.
In Goodfellas, Scorcese made it obvious why the criminals wanted- or had- to be what they were....it was fun and the perks were enormous.
The rewards outweighed the risks.
None of that is made clear in Public Enemies, where neither the devastation of the Great Depression or the lure of an easy lifestyle is ever shown.
Being a bank robber looks as boring as being a milkman with the added downside of violent death.
Where's the attraction?

It's too bad.
The combination of Bale and Depp should have been epic but for me, it was simply OK and that's just not good enough.

Stunning, touching yet not pathetic story. Great direction. Even better photography... Philip Noyce (Dead Calm...) made this film very good.

Mann was trying to show that Dillinger wasn't in love with the danger but rather he was in love with the idea of being famous.

He erred badly though because this kind of film demanded that he should have been as in your face with the characters as he was with the action.Keeping them distant from the audience was a ridiculous directorial choice and allowed no empathy from the audience whatsoever.

Depp was still pretty good though.
