Transsiberian(2008)
A decent if familiar mystery/thriller that for a while had me liking it better than I should.
At least until plot holes and an abrupt switching of tracks to become full blown Hollywood action movie had me thinking differently.
Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer play husband and wife Roy and Jessie who take the Trans-Siberian Express for a bit of adventure after missionary work in China. While riding the train they meet a charming couple who are decidedly not who they seem.
Nasty stuff happens.
Overall 7/10
Great cinematography, good directing ,so-so writing, wildly uneven acting and some very graphic violence make for a decidedly mixed bag.
Still (slightly)recommended.

Woody Harrelson has one of the most diverse resumes of any actor working today.
It's time for me to do a WH marathon and Transsiberian will definitely be on the list.

I really enjoyed Transsiberian. Claustrophobic and a competent salute to Hitchcock imo.
Watched Man On Wire last night. A highly creative (shite pun intended) feature length documentary from James March detailing Philippe Petit's daring and extravagant (illegal) high-wire routine between New York's Twin Towers in 1974. Marvellously constructed and utterly breathtaking. Received many plaudits in this year's Sundance Festival.

Yeah I hadn't heard about Man on Wire til you mentioned it in another thread.I thought it sounded interesting but I was wanting to get some feedback on it first.
Did some high level painting as a student and although scared shitless at first I came to have an appreciation of the feeling that being "up there" gives you.
Definitely going to check it out.:)

Oldboy.
A Korean revenge film (apparently part of a trilogy), filmed with operatic intensity, that plumbs the depths of Greek tragedy.
Almost ludicrously over the top- imagine Quentin Tarantino making Scarface- the film is completely engrossing despite what had to be the intentionally cartoonish nature of the plot.
I can't say I enjoyed the film but at the end I didn't feel betrayed either and even during scenes of lovingly crafted violence (not my normal cup 'o tea), I knew I had to keep watching until the question "why?" had been answered.
Pretty sure I won't hunt down the rest of the trilogy but Oldboy was worth the watch and I'm glad I saw it.
BTW...animals were definitely harmed during the filming of this movie.

Went on a binge the last few days...
The Dark Knight and Iron Man (saw both in theaters when released).
Both movies held up well watching them at home but Iron Man was the better of the two.
The Dark Knight- which I originally saw in IMAX- seemed too dark and muddy on my 20" monitor, and was also about 20 minutes too long.
Heath Ledger gave the performance of the year.
I thought Robert Downey, Jr. was perfect and even Gwyneth was fine as Pepper Potts, don't see where all the hate is coming from.
Carried on with RDJ in Tropic Thunder which seemed funnier in concept than execution.
The Tom Cruise cameo was brilliant, even though I knew he was in there, it was still a total surprise.
Last up was Wanted...brilliantly made nonsense.
If you're going to make an "action" movie, the action sequences better be good- these were.
Angelina Jolie is the queen of the genre, no one else comes close.
I was tempted to pause the film and make popcorn- my ultimate tribute to a good action flick.
Next in queue are Wall-e, Let the Right One In and The Ruins.
I've read The Ruins and just hope I can stomach the gore I know is coming.

Just a couple comments.
People who can't see the brilliance in Heath Ledger's Joker fail to see that's it's all in the details.
I thought I'd like Wanted but I didn't.
I don't know if James McAvoy's character wasn't sympathetic enough or if it his character arc was just too much of a leap.
Maybe I just don't like the whole idea of the (a)morality of a group of assassins killing for the greater good.
Whatever it was it left me cold.
Btw agree Jolie's by far the best thing about the movie even more so than the FXs.
Can't wait to see Downey in Sherlock Holmes.Besides being a fan of the boy from 221b Baker Street I think with Guy Richie at the helm it has a chance to be brilliant.
Or not but it won't be sleep inducing.

There were characters and a storyline?
I'll have to watch it again to find them.
I hope that Morgan Freeman made a buttload of cash- and I assume that he did- because he has become a real shortcut for scriptwriters. You needn't develop a character if you can just plug MF into the story and let him be his iconic self.
He is quickly becoming a parody of himself, much like Pacino and DeNiro.
Can't wait to see Downey in Sherlock Holmes.Besides being a fan of the boy from 221b Baker Street I think with Guy Richie at the helm it has a chance to be brilliant.
Or not but it won't be sleep inducing.
He has a tough row to hoe displacing Jeremy Brett from my imagination but I'm willing to make the effort.
Edit:
OK, this is weird.
Just watched Wall-e and Let The Right One In back to back and was struck by the similarities.
Nebbishy male falls for strong female, complications ensue and boy saves the day.
Wall-e was cute and impeccably rendered (of course, it's Pixar, what do you expect?) but LTROI was more striking and original.
These days it's hard to find a new angle for a vampire story but the Swedes found one.

The first bit of Wall.E is as close to art as you are going to find in films today.
And I'm not talking about the rendering.
The Departed ......I resolutely refuse to give a movie anything over an 8 unless it has a happy ending.
Or gratuitous nudity
Hopefully by a woman.

And I'm not talking about the rendering.
I assume you're referring to the "pre-EVE" segment that begins the film.
I'm going to rewatch the movie anyway, I think I was influenced by watching Let The Right One In right before and I want to go on an Easter egg hunt as well.
First up though is Quantum of Solace.
It's hard work but I'll take one for the team.
Right then.
Quantum of Solace was just pathetic.
Clearly, a lot of money was spent on the setpiece scenes but the editing made such a jumble of things that the effect was ruined.
Also, it seems to me that the one crucial thing that a Bond film must have is a good villain and Quantum just serves up a barely hyped evil businessman.
Bernard Madoff seems more Bond-scale than the twerp we got.
On the other hand, Slumdog Millionaire reminds me again of why movies can be magic.
Clever, engaging and yes, educational...I was exposed to characters and cultures that I would normally never encounter.
As a bonus, not only was the movie great but the final credits were among the best I've seen lately too.
Slumdog Millionaire.
Danny Boyle did great job.

I think MILK is the best film of the year. Singularly one of Penn's best performances and one of Gus's best films.
Love the Curious Case of Benjamin Button as well.
Slum Dog Millionaire was to soap operish and to gimmicky.

The Wackness- Ben Kingsley, Olivia Thirlby, Josh Peck.
A highly touted (Sundance favorite), semi-coming of age film set in 1994 New York.
I appreciated the acting and enjoyed looking at Thirlby but the movie made no great impression on me.
A meandering pace- which I think was intentional- and characters with whom I didn't really connect or much like, left me uncaring and wondering what the point was.
Maybe the ennui and lack of connection were the point but I don't think I'll rewatch to see.

Risky Business- Tom Cruise, Rebecca De Mornay.
The 1983 comedy that launched Tom Cruise to stardom (and De Mornay into the semen stained dreams of a generation of smitten young males) still holds up after all this time.
Could be paired with The Graduate for a peek into the generation that would soon welcome Ronald Reagan and an era of unbridled consumerism.

Taken- Liam Neeson.
Neeson plays an ex-government operative (a "preventer", whatever that is) who's estranged daughter is kidnapped in Paris and sold into sexual slavery.
In another thread I discussed the contract that the viewer and the filmmaker must enter into as the theater goes dark- I suspend belief and you entertain me.
Different genres invoke different clauses in this contract and if we both do our parts, a good time is had by all.
Taken doesn't live up to it's end of the bargain.
Our hero has 96 hours to recover his daughter- during this time he will not sleep, eat, poop or in any way act human but still will not need a shave or look rumpled.
Check contract- oh, OK, that's allowed.
The French police are corrupt and incompetent but mainly not visible anywhere- don't need to check contract, this is a given.
Dozens of supposedly tough and scary Albanians will attempt to kill Neeson, he will escape without a scratch while they die in droves- right, I have a problem here.
Ooops, check the small print..."a man with a machine gun (subclause: many men with many submachine guns...) will fire thousands of rounds and not only fail to touch the hero but also leave his car functional and driveable"...oh crap, OK.
I'm beginning to regret signing up for this...
And so it goes as we approach the big (and completely inevitable) ending.
So, we're finally here...the auction of the abducted girls- to fat Arabs, who else?.
As the "product" is brought to the stage for bidding, the contract is irrevocably and cynically broken.
The girls are dressed in little harem outfits...no boobs, not even a nipple.
Apparently, the tough guys- the same ones who will kidnap girls from the airport, hook them on drugs and sell them into prostitution- are just a teensy bit prissy and won't strip them down for our prurient pleasure.
FAIL!
I'm calling my lawyer, this contract is void.

The Day The Earth Stood Still.
In any decent film class this movie would be used to explain why remakes are a bad idea.
Absolutely no redeeming value, the special effects are mediocre, the message is sophomoric and Jaden Smith made me want to pith myself.
In fact, were I Klaatu, Smith would have convinced me that mankind was not worth saving...sayanora and goodbye, whiners.
Aaargh.
Fortunately, I was able to use The Escapist as a chaser and my faith in film was restored.
What appears at first to be a nice, tight little prison break movie turns into quite a bit more as the plot unfolds.
The British accents are almost inpenatrable at times- at least to the callow American ear- but the gist is easy to follow once you get the rhythm and the logic of the film (which is heavily crosscut) begins to unfold.
Referring to Guy Richie's oeuvre, I said that the Brits are now the masters of the hardboiled noir crime genre and The Escapist only reinforces my belief.
They seem to have a lot of fun along the way as well.

Max Payne (2008)- Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Beau Bridges.
Based on a (reputedly) popular video game, I had high expectations for Max based on its humble origins.
After all, we know from Boogie Nights that Wahlberg has an enormous dick and fromThat 70's Show that Kunis is obviously fuckable, so in a real video game adaptation there would be non-stop boning interspersed with improbably protracted gunplay.
Director John Moore decided to take the film in a different direction however.
In an early scene, Payne kicks a nearly nude and highly oversexed Russian babe out of his bed without laying so much as a finger on her.
I think this was meant to convey Payne's undying love for his slaughtered wife and his commitment to finding her killer but all it really does is establish that Max Payne is gay.
This is further reinforced when, over the course of the next hour and a half, Payne does not bone Mila Kunis's character Mona Sax.
Not even once.
Two other things struck me about the film.
-The weather.
In many scenes it is simultaneously raining AND snowing...this is just fucked up. Where the hell is this movie supposed to be taking place and what season is it supposed to be?
I know, I know...this is just nitpicking but I started expecting some apocolyptic End Of Days, Biblical shit to start coming down but apparently Wahlberg's contract specified that all that had to be saved for The Happening so there is no follow through.
Instead we get the Valkyries but they aren't nearly as scary as killer trees, are they.
-Beau Bridges.
Obviously, younger brother Jeff was too busy creating the exact same character in Iron Man, so Beau got this part.
Beau however is chinless, and everybody knows that chinless people can't be trusted, so his big reveal as the villain surprises no one except those of us who fell asleep due to lack of Wahlberg/Kunis monkey sex during the previous hour of the film.
The logical choice for this role is Christopher Walken because what this film really needs is more cowbell.
I suppose there will be a sequel.
I'll probably watch it if only to see how an openly gay video game character deals with the Obama administration.
I can see a part it it for Beyonce.
Oh, I feel dirty.

Terrific review clocker but you didn't give it a rating so I'm not sure how you really felt.
I just want to note that personally I'm of the honest belief that every(good looking) B movie actress be contractually obligated to do a nude scene.I mean it's false advertising otherwise .
B-movie = tits don't they teach these new directors anything in film school.
Speaking of directors John Moore must have tired of making terrible ,pointless remakes(like his self proclaimed idol Tony Scott who has remakes for The Taking of Pelham 123 and The Warriors in the works.I intend to kill him as so as I can find the time btw) so as diversion he decided to see if he could ruin a videogame franchise instead.
He succeeded.
