Outlander.

The premise for this movie was cooked in a bong...
Whoa dude, what if Predator met the Vikings?
How could it fail?

Well, in almost every way actually.
I have so many nits to pick that a proper enumeration would take longer than the movie itself- never a good sign.
Suffice to say...
In too many scenes the hero, James Caviezel, reminded me more of Zoolander than a mercenary space Viking.

Made me root for the alien most of the time.

Had this been a made-for-TV movie shown on the Sci-fi Channel, I'd cut it some slack but alas, you're expected to shell out cash (or burn up some bandwidth, like I did) and you really deserve so much more.

Skip it and hope that the new Underworld is better.

21-Kevin Spacey, Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth.

Risky Business for the new millennium.
MIT students, lead by their shady professor (Spacey), become experts at counting cards and take Vegas for mucho dinero.
Naturally, this does not go unnoticed (nothing in Vegas goes unnoticed) and mayhem ensues.

Based on a true story- which I suspect is not as dramatic as the movie- this film actually captures a lot of the atmosphere of a casino and the desperate excitement they engender.
Capable cast, solid script, bouncy music and cinematography make for an enjoyable few hours.

Really, pair 21 with Risky Business...the parallels are significant.

Well, I finally get Mila Kunis.
A breakthrough role, she finally transcends the bod and becomes the kind of person I'd actually like to spend some time with.
I think there were some other people in the movie too.

Oh yeah, Russel Brand...he was kind of amusing and Jack McBrayer expands on his role from 30 Rock.

Did I mention Mila Kunis?

Well, last night turned into Outrage Theater, although I didn't mean for it to.
Admittedly, I should have seen it coming (I knew the general outline of both films) but completely underestimated my vulnerability.

So I paired Changeling with Defiance and fed my inner apoplectic.

Both films involve the brutal suppression of humanity by institutional means- in one case the German army, in the other, the LA police force.

Of the two movies, Defiance is probably the most hopeful but Changeling had the greater effect.

Oddly, right after watching Changeling, the comparison I came up with was to Night Of The Living Dead.
This was not a spurious thought...NOTLD made such an impression on me because it was the first movie I remember (keep in mind I saw this when it first came out) where nobody makes it out alive...everyone gets fucked.
Changeling ends the same way- we're informed that the mother never finds/sees her son again.
No happy, uplifting ending here, folks.

Both films were very watchable although I had the slightly niggling problem with Angelina Jolie that I always have...it's hard to get past the exterior to appreciate the interior. She does a great job of acting but how do you dismiss the thought that she's basically a goddess and in any era would be a movie star, not a single mom working a deadend job?

There is also a line in the movie that you could spot coming from a million miles away (you'll know it when you see it) but it was a pleasure watching Jolie deliver it, so I'll give Eastwood a pass.

Unlike Jolie in Changeling, Daniel Craig actually looked physically appropriate for his role in Defiance- he's not a conventionally handsome man and didn't "outpretty" his company.
This went a long way towards immersing me in the movie and although Defiance is the more formulaic of the two, it's easily the more palatable because of the rosier ending.

They're both good movies, watch either to get a good dose of moral outrage but beware pairing them together, life is depressing enough without immersing yourself in celluloid despair.

I call it the Tony Curtis effect(as in "Yonder lies the castle of my fad-dah.")where a certain aspect of an actor, no matter what else is going on onscreen,is too distracting to overlook.

OK, PEOPLE! LISTEN UP!

At ease, please.
Now that I have your attention, we need to talk.
All you people who are attaching a rating- like 9/10- to your "reviews"...and, let's be honest here, hardly any of these are actually reviews at all, are they?...your rating means NOTHING if we don't know what you think a ten is.

So if your post looks like this...

Slumdog Millionaire
7/10
...you have effectively said ziltch except that you viewed the film.

So please, either write a brief description of your reaction to the film or just list the title but stop with the meaningless "x out of 10" shorthand.

Now, back to whatever you were doing.

That was my whole point though...I don't see how you can arrive at any relative comparison at all.

For instance, my idea of a ten might be Citizen Kane, yours might be Dumb and Dumber...if we both rate Slumdog Millionaire as a 7, what does that say to a third party who isn't aware of our preferences?

Rachel Getting Married.

Just to get it out of the way- yes, Rachel does indeed get married.

This is not a movie in the ways movies today are traditionally defined.
There is no plot, no real beginning, middle and end...nothing blows up and there are no robots.
Instead, this film immerses us in the experience of a wedding weekend, held in a rambling house in the (obviously well-to-do) Connecticut suburbs.
There are lots of people around, only a few of them formally introduced and seemingly, non-stop live music.

Technically, the film is a mishmash of styles- some scenes are formally presented, others feel like a cell phone camera wending through the crowd.
We do learn- more by osmosis than anything else- some of the family's history but the wedding itself is the real center of the film.

I'd like to attend a party like this one- not as a principal player, just an attendee.
The food looked good, lots of spirits flowed and the people were friendly and inviting.
Spend a few hours, have a good time then leave the family to sort out their dramas as best they can.
Which is exactly what this movie does.

An interesting way to spend a few hours.

Gran Torino

I thought Eastwood played a good part, I liked the toughness of the guy and he was funny in small parts. The beating of the Chinese girl was rather shocking, I found that a little disturbing. But the worst part was the ending, it took me by surprise and i didnt like it. I thought he should have opened a can of whoop-ass or something. Overall it was moving in various parts so i'd give it 7.5/10

Thank you for spelling the title correctly, yevgeny.

If possible you might want to rewatch the movie and see if the ending doesn't make more sense to you the second time around.
80 year old men have pretty much emptied their whoop-ass cans and to suddenly reanimate as Dirty Harry might have been initially more satisfying, in the long run it would have been too easy.

Maybe.

I watched Gran Torino as well - about five times, in fact (I took it to work; my guys are all movie buffs).

Very good movie (I'll say 9/10) with lots of social import; Eastwood's character ends up embodying honor, integrity, and redemption.

Better with each viewing, truth.

Also watched The Wrestler; good flick (8/10), moves quickly and doesn't dwell on minutiae (e.g., his daughter's lesbianism is naught but another factor in the main protagonist's alienation from his daughter).

Good entertainment that makes you think a bit.

BTW-

Welcome back, Mickey Rourke, from fifteen or so years in limbo.

The band that defined, and still exemplifies, "arena rock"-Pink Floyd has it all, great musicianship , fabulous sound quality and the be-all-end-all light show.

Absolute crap video quality- probably video instead of film- but oddly, it almost doesn't matter...the distortion and fuzziness perfectly replicates the state I was in the only time I saw them live (Animals tour).

Call it 11/10.

Also, the datage on your VHS version most be smudged - the Pulse performance was from 1994, I believe, and the DVD remaster appeared in 2005.

The 1987 you see on your tape box dates from the post-Roger Waters court victory won by Gilmour, Mason and Wright for the rights to "Pink Floyd".

Frozen River- Melissa Leo.

Ms. Leo should win the Oscar for her performance...she won't, but she should.

A down-and-out single mom in upstate New York partners up with a young, troubled Indian girl to make money by smuggling illegals over the US/Canadian border.
It doesn't go well.

This film almost comes across as a documentary, so lacking in the technical artifice that we usually see even in the plainest of Hollywood films.
Everyone looks and acts exactly like I'd imagine the characters really are...no artificial glamour or unnecessary staging.
Hard choices must be made, bad decisions sometimes happen and no one looks heroic in the process.

Grittily depressing but strangely uplifting at the same time- you get the feeling that everything will work out eventually although the film's ending does not make this at all clear.

What people will do for a new doublewide.

If Academy Awards really went to the best performances Melissa Leo would win hands down.
Unfortunately subtlety and believability have never been high on the list on things that get someone an Oscar.

Get yourself in a good Holocaust,anti-religion or handicap of the week movie , shamelessly chew the scenery and wake up with the little golden fellow on Monday.

Still Leo might win if the Academy conservatives were offended by Winslet's naughty bits.

Dunno how "ripped from the front page" it is (I don't read newspapers from upstate NY) but Frozen River is certainly a human interest story that doesn't try to extract large truths from small events (if that's what you're into, see Body of Lies).

For some reason, after watching River, I wondered what Changeling might have been had Leo been cast instead of Jolie.
Certainly different, and I suspect, better.

Role Models- Paul Rudd, Seann William Scott.

A totally formulaic movie that's absolutely hilarious.
OK, if not hilarious at least very funny.

Once the plot begins to unwind you can totally ignore it...you know how everything will end up, no cliche will be denied it's place in the sun.
Doesn't matter though, the cast carries this off flawlessly and there are some great throwaway lines.

All movies don't have to be great, uplifting events- sometimes you just want to chow down on some popcorn, hear some potty mouthed kids and have a few laughs.
Oh yeah, and boobs...gotta have some boobs.

Well, step right up, here's the movie for you.
And today, for me.

Transporter 3- Jason Statham, Natalya Rudakova.

The bestest Audi ad ever!

I'm pretty sure there was a plot- something about ecology actually...but don't worry your pretty little head about it.
Two hours of Statham being badass, Rudakova being adorable and an Audi A8 W12 being invincible.

The most improbable part of the movie was that Statham's character likes to fish.
Once you accept that, everything else makes perfect sense.

Well, almost.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/clocker/audi.jpg

I don't see anything here that you can fix with your bare hands- although I'm willing to concede the possibility that Frank Martin is so badass that he has metric tools for fingers- and the car also drives extremely well on flat tires...but this is just quibbling.

Statham is likeable (and buff) enough to sell his character, Rudakova has killer freckles and will pee in public and the Audi has self-replacing windows...what more could you ask for with your popcorn and bourbon (the last might just be me...)?
