Depp was still pretty good though.
Everyone was pretty good, the movie should have been great.

I fear for Christian Bale- he's become the go-to actor for steely-eyed, gravel voiced characters (the kind of guy who has great screen presence but in real life would scare you shitless) and his range seems to be contracting instead of growing.

I was also disappointed with the liberties that Mann took with historical fact.
IRL, Hoover was so jealous of Purvis that he drove him out of the FBI a year after Dillinger died.
In the movie Purvis is a lapdog, which eliminated a whole avenue of drama that might have humanized the FBI and raised them above the soulless- but basically incompetent- hunting machine that Mann presented.

For me, Public Enemies stands as the poster child for over-hyped movies, even above Transformers 2 or Terminator: Salvation.
The latter didn't pretend to be anything but summer popcorn flicks (BAM! BOOBS!) while PE strove to be The Godfather and hardly measures up to the third sequel.

The Kingdom - Good movie
The girl next door(2007) - Made me cry and angry

The Girl Next door was so lame. I had high expectations from this crappy movie.

In my case I was just angry.

The last movie I watched is District 9. (downloaded it)
I liked it, so I will get the Blu-Ray.

The Last Movie I paid for (go to the theater) Lord of the Rings (the first part) I think its been almost 10 years now.
How much is a movie ticket now? 20 bucks? LOL

I watched pretty woman for the first time, yesterday. oh my god I loved it. it's just so lovely and funny. I've always dismissed it, regarding it as a crappy chickflick (which I guess is true?) but I actually really enjoyed it. in the opera scene, I just LOVE it when julia roberts smiles. I'm not really a fan of hers, but that smile melted my heart a little bit. so adorable. and richard gere's eyes... WHERE ARE THEY? does he have any? so fascinating!

so yeah. I'm a fan. straight, too! unbelievable, I know.

I Sell The Dead- Dominic Monighan, Ron Perlman, Larry Fessenden.

Fitfully amusing tale of a pair of graverobbers (Monighan & Fessenden) and their encounters with the dead and not-so-dead.
Clearly made on a shoestring budget, IRTD relies more on atmospherics than special effects...think old time Hammer Films instead of Rob Zombie.

Told in a series of flashbacks as Arthur Blake (Monighan) awaits the guillotine, the different episodes vary widely in quality/mood...I wonder if the film was shot over a period of time instead of all at once.
Oh well, doesn't matter...the movie doesn't take itself seriously and neither do I, although I do have to marvel that such a low rent project could somehow ensnare two actors like Perlman and Monighan.
Indy cred, FTW, I suppose.

Green Street Hooligans

Has Elija Wood in it (frodo from Lord of the Rings fame). He plays a rather timid American guy traveling to England to visit his sister. He befriends the leader of a 'firm' (Basically a gang - each soccer team inn England has at least 1 of them). The story is great, and the action scenes are also well done. Great sleeper movie !!!

Knowing- Nic Cage.

A thinly veiled "rapture-fantasy" that didn't piss me off.
In fact, I'd say it was pretty good.

The two main CGI set pieces (the plane and the train) were the best I've seen all year...absolutely spectacular.
It's a mystery why the movie's one real clunker line- "I will never let that happen"- was prominently featured in the trailer, it should have been left on the editing suite floor, but oh well.

Indeed good action movie, classic story about hero and his path to revenge, nothing especially new in this area. But i was quite impressed by action sequences, they are intense and they gave you really good martial arts moves which u didnt see before, its obvious they were innovative in this area. U wont find "deep" dialogs in this movie or something smiliar only good fight :). All in all, its definitely worth of watching.

Internal Affairs- Richard Gere, Andy Garcia, Laurie Metcalf.

Playing against type, Gere is a thoroughly corrupt and insidiously vicious L.A. cop.
Garcia and Metcalf are the internal affairs team who stumble upon Gere's organization and try to take him down.

Not as epic as L.A. Confidential, and suffering from being set in more modern times, IA still features very good performances from both Gere and Garcia but Metcalf is kind of wasted.

Not a waste of time.

The Damned United- Michael Sheen.

I'll admit that I know nothing about English football and am mystified by the politics and fanatical loyalties.
Fortunately, my ignorance was not a hindrance to enjoying every minute of this film.

This may be the greatest sports film ever that actually has very little of the sport featured.
It's all about ego and human frailty and Michael Sheen does a great job projecting both.

He's amazing really...in the past few months I've enjoyed his performances as David Frost, Tony Blair, a werewolf and now, an English football manager.
What range.

I'm not sure if my outsiders perspective added to or detracted from my perception of The Damned United- maybe more familiarity with the nuances would have helped, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Plus, it featured Deep Purple's Hush, one of the all time great songs and even has Colm Meaney in a major role...what more could you ask for really?

What a "summer blockbuster" should be (Fuck Transformers2).
Fluff and blood.

Anvil: The Story of Anvil.
I don't know what to think of this documentary.

Disclaimer: Metal music ain't my cuppa tea...think it's mindless shit...

Anvil was apparently one of the ur-metal bands, the film opens with interviews with "stars" like Slash and Lars Ulrich who cite Anvil as one of the most influential and talented bands of the genre.
No one can explain why they didn't step up into big time rock stardom (my theory is that they were ridiculous but that didn't stop Twisted Sister and Motorhead, did it?).

Cut to modern times and Anvil is still at it, albeit stringier of hair and paunchier of gut. They never quit, and as they stumble through their day jobs are still consumed with the idea that they'll make it big.

You can't watch this movie and NOT be reminded of This Is Spinal Tap...whether that's a good thing or not, I'm not sure.

A well-chosen name goes a lone way in defining a character .
Even if you had never seen Raiders of the Lost Ark the moniker Indiana Jones brings up a certain image in your head.
Same with Tyler Durden or James Tiberius Kirk.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre : The Beginning sort of watched .

Sure with a title like that I should have been a little more aware going in but seriously who gets a kick out of this crap.

I hung in for the first part - the build up mostly because I have a thing for Doira Baird even though I pretty much knew things weren't going to end well for her. A few murders in no big deal because they were characters made for the offing that I had no invested interest in but as soon as the writers thought it a good idea to skin alive ,chainsaw and cut off the face ( to be used as the mask by Tommy/Leatherface) of the erstwhile hero who's greatest "crime" was being brave and putting his life at risk by defending his brother, I knew it was time to bail.
Glad I did .Read the rest on TheMovieSpoiler - good is slaughtered to the last (wo)man and no redeeming qualities are granted.Nihilistic bullshit.

Good movie on the other hand .Hero survives bad people die .Or at the very least hero's death is given some meaning. Is that so bloody hard to fathom?

Yeah, I was aware of those but avoided them.
For the most part, I consider sequels and prequels to be intellectual laziness by both the creators and the audience.

OK, fine, you came up with a good idea and executed it well...now fucking go out and develop another one.
Sequels are easy for the viewer because he already knows the character(s) and the basic framework and thus, doesn't have to start from scratch and figure out what's happening.

People who perform regular jobs get rewarded for mastering a basic skill set and then perfecting it...artists should not.

A young New Yorker (Adams) vows to cook her way through Julia Child's (Streep) Mastering the Art of French Cooking, 500+ recipes in one year.

This movie strongly reminded me of two other films...it had the totally sweet aura of Waitress and the masterful depiction of an iconic person shown in The Queen.

It's Streep's movie and she manages to portray Child as a real person instead of the caricature she could easily be...not an easy task.

The Usual Suspects.

It's good to revisit the classics and I consider this film to deserve classic status both for the densely written script and Kevin Spacey's performance.
Unlike Roger Ebert- who really hated the Matryoshka nature of the story- I think The Usual Suspects plays fair with the audience and rewards their involvement...it's a journey worth taking.

The cast is uniformly excellent (although Benicio Del Toro's approach to his character still baffles me) and the dialogue is crisp and occasionally laugh out loud funny ("One, two, three, four, five, six, seven... Lee Harvey Oswald was a fag.")

A great, noirish thriller.

Mister Frost (1990)- Jeff Goldblum, Alan Bates, Kathy Baker.

Supposedly a cult favorite, I'd only recently heard of this film.
It's a odd bird, basically a shit movie with a great casting choice- Goldblum, of course.

The story, completely implausible and riddled with hilarious plot holes, concerns Mister Frost (Goldblum) who, at the very beginning, charmingly admits to being a mass murderer and then goes mute.
Having been shuttled around European mental hospitals for two years (why no prison, who knows?), he arrives at a totally ridiculous high end facility where he deigns to finally speak to Kathy Bates' character, a shrink.

Turns out, Mister Frost is the Devil and if he can get Bates to believe in him it will be a triumph of faith over science...or some such horseshit.

It's really too bad, Goldblum does a great job with a pathetic story and in a better movie could easily rank with Anthony Hopkins as a cinematic evil icon.
He's got the mannerisms and charm to make the Devil a worthy adversary but his choice of Bates as an opponent is baffling...she's a complete lightweight by comparison.

This ain't the movie it should have been and that's a damn shame.

Darkly humorous and well acted by the entire cast.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar and sometimes, a movie is just what the title implies.
86 minutes of absurdly over the top gun fantasy sequences...the squib budget on this flick must have been astronomical...although, to be completely fair, one must mention that two people die by carrot.

Roger Ebert said it best: "I may disapprove of a movie for going too far, and yet have a sneaky regard for a movie that goes much, much farther than merely too far."

Don't break out the good stuff for this movie, cheap bourbon is what it demands.
Given a suitable amount you'll think this film is a blast.

I did.

The last weekend it was a European movies weekend for me. Two of the movies I've watched are really good choices

Man som hatar kvinnor (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1132620/)
The first one is a mystery thiller from Sweden based on the first part of Stieg Larsson's Millenium a best selling trilogy.
An aged former head of an industrial dynasty hires a just failed journalist to investigate a 40 years old family mystery.
A fascinating mix of serial killers, secrets and hackers in the cold Swedish atmosphere.

I've read the original book last summer and I was thrilled waiting for this movie. The movie is as exciting as the book,
although it's impossible to cover a +600 pages book in 2.5 hours movie. Anyway it's definetely this year's best mystery movie
and I think if it was an English speaking movie it could be something like Silence of the labs of the decade.
Lisbeth is an original character with a unique balance of good and madness

8/10 And I'm waiting for the second part (already read it)

Das weisse Band - Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1149362/)
It's been a while since a film really socked and disturbed me. Haneke's film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year
and tells the story of a German village on the eve of the first world war beset by sporadic outbreaks of unexplained violence.

The film is shot in black and white and it's a film that I have to see it again soon just to make sure I haven't missed a thing.
Children suffering both physical and psychological are trying to find something that will take them out of that misery.
Haneke is trying to explain the birth of the Nazi generation but he revealed that he could place the story in many other places like modern Iran for example.
The children who carry out acts of random cruelty will grow up to be the generation that will spawn violence were his words in an interview I've read.

9/10

2012- stars several thousand CGI specialists.

Movie pissed me off.
OK, I get it...you want to make a movie where the entire world (except Africa, apparently) gets royally fuckatated. I've got no problem with that.
However, after destroying billions of people, don't expect me to give a fuck about the vapid cliched characters that you've decided will "humanize" the disaster for me.
99.9% of the human race didn't survive their first brush with this cataclysm and you want me to believe this mediocre band made it through multiple incidents of geological hell?

SPOILERS AHEAD...
John Cusack and his unbelievably lucky- and completely undeserving- gaggle make it to the ark and then proceed to fuck up the loading ramp, nearly causing the loss of thousands of (supposedly) precious lives, indeed the entire ark is nearly sunk.
When they manage to right their fuckup, everyone cheers.

I would have fucking shot him. Multiple times.
Oliver Pratt, ostensibly the "bad guy", was entirely correct...leave the ramp closed and get the hell out of there.

Then, less than a month after the entire surface of the Earth has moved all over the globe, the arc surfaces to sunny blue skies.
WTF?
The detonation of Yellowstone alone would have filled the atmosphere with enough dust to put us in an ice age for decades, if not centuries...none of the arc survivors would have seen the sun again in their lifetime, and maybe not even in the kids lifetimes. If you're going to destroy the world, don't go all soft on me in the last five minutes and show me fluffy clouds and ponies, have the courage of your convictions. These people have been through hell and it's only going to get worse.
What's going to happen when all the Pantene and Crest run out?

Finally...Africa.
Seems it was largely left untouched...albeit raised several thousand feet.
All of the surviving arks are headed there.
Wonder how the African survivors are going to feel about being overrun by a bunch of non-native outsiders who, judging by their actions during the rest of the movie, are going to be feeling pretty damn superior and self-righteous (remember, the majority of the survivors bought their way onto the ark and weren't chosen for their ethics and civic mindedness) and not about to let a bunch of indigenous savages get in the way of their plan for repopulating the world.

/SPOILERS

Oh well, I had low expectations and they were fully met, so I really have nothing to complain about.
It was a completely crap movie but, much like New Moon, 2012 catered precisely to it's target demographic and I'm sure they loved it.
It'll make a trillion dollars and the only joy I get from that is wondering what Roland Emmerich can do now that he's destroyed the entire planet...maybe take out the Milky Way?

I'd like to see John Cusack and his whiny kids survive that.

Probably pretty much the way they felt the first time.:idunno:

Depends on who you're talking to.

Rereading the initial post, I think it's not as coherent as it should be but the movie simply doesn't justify more effort on my part.

I really have no problem with blockbuster/special effects heavy movies...I'm totally willing to suspend belief and go along for the ride.
What kills me though is that most films of this genre spend so much energy/time/talent on the effects and then hang them on a script scribbled on a bar nap.
There was more thought given to the physics of cars tumbling through space that the motivation and actions of the protagonists.

I spent a lot of time- while watching the movie- thinking that the whole thing would have been far more entertaining if Woody Harrelson's character had been the focus...he had the requisite insanity and resourcefulness to maybe survive the catastrophe but no, he delivers the necessary plot point and gets discarded early.
Meanwhile, the prototypical middle class American family- who struggle to survive for ONE GODDAMN DAY in a national park- somehow find the reserves needed to navigate an epic upheaval.
Credit PBS and NPR for this, I suppose.

Sigh.

This part just struck me " the majority of the survivors bought their way onto the ark ".In the context of the movie does that make any sense seeing as monetary system as we know it would have a hard time withstanding the end of the world?
I mean even if you are the most corrupt asshole on the planet it would make little sense in taking anyone who isn't directly going to contribute to your future well-being.Doctors and builders and farmers and the like.
Comes right down to it I wouldn't even take like Playmates or anything because chances are the floozies would just leave me for someone else.

I understood- as much as anything in the film is comprehensible- that the tickets were sold to finance the construction, not that the wealth would be of any use afterwards.

This is of course absurd, since you're now saving a class of people who are used to being cared for/waited on, hardly the brave pioneer type that would be needed.
Saving the workers who actually built the arks would make more sense.

Did you wonder what the hell they thought they were going to do with the Mona Lisa in the post-apocalypse world?
Rebuild the Louvre so all the folks- with their massive amounts of leisure time- could ponder their former glory?
More likely, it'll get eaten, just like the giraffes and children.
The rich won't take to starving with grace.

But really, did you expect logic here?

I don't think Emmerich is exactly what you would call an actor's director.:eyebrows:
"John look over here and show disbelief.Good, good .Ok now scream as loud as you can.No louder and more nonsensically and while you're at it wave your arms like an idiot "

I know that you're joking but for a disaster movie to work it requires a real investment by the audience in the principle characters.,otherwise you don't care what happens.
The same of course can be said about any movie but even it's more necessary in disaster films where it's literally a question of life and death.

Either that or put in a lot of gratuitous nudity .

Btw it doesn't necessarily take backstory or a ton of character development to get people to care about a character. Even dogs without the benefit of dialogue but with a decent story and director behind them can accomplish that in one scene.

Of course dogs are nude .

The last movie I watched was Coraline. I loved the visuals. The story was kind of weak. It had some good strange moments but the plot just never seems to go anywhere of consequence.

I wish more films were made in this style though. It was a visual treat for sure. Especially in HD. Watch in on blu ray if you have the chance!

Watched Highlander (1986) yesterday.

First I have to say I'm biased since I grew up listening to Queen. So I thought the movie was great. Just 2 things that bothered me. Sean Connery will have to work on his spanish accent and the scenes with the Kurgan were too similar to those from the first Terminator movie.

took the camera d’Or prize at cannes and its probably the reason why I had to check it out.Very little dialogue but the acting makes up for that in telling this love story.Am not that much into film recommendations but if you got a taste for foreign then this one is a sure must get.Probably the best thing to come out of AU in a long time.

The Informant!- Matt Damon.
Based on the true story of Mark Whitacre (Damon), the highest ranking corporate whistleblower in American history, The Informant! is a breezy look at corporate fraud and what the FBI will do to combat it.

A very successful VP in a little known but very powerful industry, Whitacre approaches the FBI and offers to help prove charges of worldwide price-fixing.
Problem is, he may have a personal agenda behind his seemingly altruistic offer.

The other, and far bigger, problem is that he may be crazy.

Matt Damon is the whole reason to see this film.
No Jason Bourne here...Damon gained a lot of weight for the role and is completely believable as a corporate drone with visions of grandeur.

Throughout the movie Whitacre's interior monologue is presented as a voice-over, much of it is outright hilarious even as it show's his increasing disconnect from reality.

Since the only version I could obtain was *cough* a cam, I can't comment on the cinematography or sound design other than to say that the soundtrack was oddly manic but ultimately quite apt.

Watch it to see Matt Damon give a good, if different, performance.

Hardware(1990) uncut .

A cult classic 90.s sci-fi spatterfest which after being hung up in legal limbo for years because of distribution rights recently became available on blu-ray/DVD in the previously ( in NA) uncut flirt with Xrated form.

Breath.

Like Terminator if envisioned by Clive Barker.Sex violence and cool music. With better production values it would compare well to staples of the genre.A few well known faces (Dylan McDermott) and a tough heroine to both root for and lust after.
The script though not amazing is at least unpredictable( as much as this type of movie allows ) which in itself is a welcome treat.
Anyone that has played Borderlands will see some distinct similarities to that as well.

I think anyone who appreciates a good dystopian movie and isn't put off by a little cheese a modicum of sex and a lot of violence would enjoy it.

I followed IdolEyes' suggestion (against my better judgement :P) and saw The Man Who Would be King.

I really enjoyed it. Why? Because it was serious and funny at the same time and it was an adventure. Not many movies are like that (I can only think of old Indy ones atm).

PS: Dude you sure don't suck at suggestions, it was just what I'd been looking for!
