It's been a while since we last heard anything about Chrome OS, Google's lightweight OS based on the open source Chromium OS. However, the rumor mill chugged into action yesterday as reports emerged that vendors will start showing off Chrome OS smartbooks later this month.
It's been nearly a year since Google lifted the curtain on Chrome OS. However, we've seen little of the operating system since then, and over the last few months, discussion about it has quieted down considerably. Bringing the OS back on stage is a Digitimes report that suggests we'll see vendors announcing "smartbooks" running the OS at the end of this month as well as a Google-branded notebook from the search giant itself.

Proponents of 3D movies often point to Avatar, saying, smugly, “Well, look how great that movie turned out!” Yeah, that was the only one, and it was directed by James Cameron. Your typical Hollywood dross isn’t, in fact, directed by Cameron, nor does it take very obvious cues from Sega’s Panzer Dragoon series. Cameron has hit out at lazy Hollywood studios that think they can make a quick buck by converting their 2D movies into 3D at the last minute—Clash of the Titans being the worst offender. If you want a good 3D movie, he said, it has to be shot in 3D from the word go. Otherwise, don’t even bother.

The Fedora development community announced on Tuesday the official release of Fedora 14, codenamed Laughlin. The new version is a bit light on user-facing changes, but adds some useful features for developers. Fedora typically issues a new release every six months and is loosely aligned with the GNOME development cycle. Each release brings updated software and some new packages.

Even though wireless video streaming solutions seem to pop just about everywhere nowadays these are still to expensive for the average consumer while image lag and transmission range can still prove to be a problem so Thanko developed an adapter that sends HDMI video or audio pver to your HDTV via Ethernet.

Ethernet connectivity aside, this works pretty much like your standard wireless video transmission kit, coming with two units (a receiver and a transmitter), one of these being attached to your laptop, PC or any other type of HDMI enabled device while the receiver gets connected to your HDTV.

Delegation of the Holy See tells gathering of the World Intellectual Property Organization that although it affirms the right of authors to be recognized and rewarded for their work, it’s important to remember that the whole purpose of intellectual property protection is the “promotion of literary, scientific or artistic production and, generally, of inventive activity for the sake of the ‘common good.’”

Thanks to the Nepalese telecom company Ncell, climbing the remote cliffs that dot the roof of the world is no longer a good excuse for failing to respond to emails. Ncell has brought 3G service to the Mount Everest base camp, allowing climbers and hikers to check their email and make phone calls without using bulky satellite phones.
"This achievement is as mighty as the altitude as 3G high speed internet will bring faster, more affordable telecommunication services to the people living in the Khumbu Valley, trekkers, and climbers alike," Lars Nyberg, chief of the Swedish telecom company TeliaSonera, told Reuters.

A young man, who as a teenager file-shared two music tracks, has finally discovered his fate. After rightsholders demanded damages of 600 euros ($828) the case dragged through the legal system. After nearly five years a court in Germany has just published its decision. It ruled that the damages demands of the rightsholders were excessive and instead ordered the defendant to pay 30 euros ($41.00) damages.

More pictures of the rumored PlayStation Phone have shown up, and the device looks as sleek as ever. Details about the device’s software and Sony’s plans have also been revealed through an earnings call and sources close to the project.

But first let’s deal with the question of the device’s authenticity. When we reported on the PlayStation Phone last week, it was the culmination of a long series or rumors about an Android-powered, Sony-designed gaming device. The source for this big development was gadget blog Engadget, which simply posted pictures and details under the headline “The PlayStation Phone.”

The free web hosting service GeoCities will be archived (around 900 GB of data) and released on the BitTorrent by Archive Team one year after Yahoo! shut it down.
Launched in 1995, GeoCities was acquired by Yahoo! Four years later for $3.57 billion in stock. The Internet giant shut down the service last year.
"It’s not like Yahoo! had some sort of terrible server failure or something," said the Archive Team. "They in fact had made the active decision to turn off the site called GeoCities, an at-that-point 15 year old hosting site that contained terabytes of user-generated content."

Here’s yet another chapter in the ongoing war (or shall I say E-drama) between the warez scene and torrent sites. Earlier, we saw a SceneNotice revealing names of SysOps and server IP addresses of the popular scene tracker SCC (if you don’t know what a SceneNotice is, read this post). Today, two more sites have been ‘targeted’ by the scene, namely the hugely popular General/0day torrent tracker TorrentLeech and specialized TV torrent site BTN. ...

A federal judge today issued an injunction against a new Massachusetts law that tried to apply its "matter harmful to minors" law to the Internet. Because it's difficult to ascertain someone's age on the 'Net, that attempt turned out to be far too broad.
The fuss began back in February, when the state supreme court ruled that the "matter" which could harm minors did not legally include electronic transmissions. The result: overturning a conviction of a man who engaged in lurid instant messaging chats with someone who he believed to be 13 (in reality, "she" was the police, who arrested the man when he tried to meet the "girl").
