More recently, scientists at the University of Washington began using a game called FoldIt to solve problems related to molecular science and, as the title suggests, folding and design of proteins.

This may well be the largest consumer telecommunications refund in history. Verizon Wireless said Sunday it will pay up to $90 million in refunds to some 15 million subscribers who were charged for data usage or Internet access, though they weren't on data usage plans. The company will credit current customers who were billed for bogus data sessions between $2 and $6 each on their October and November bills. And it will cut checks in the same amounts to former customers.

Despite several recent high-profile heists at cargo warehouses, thieves still pulled off a RM4-million theft at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport here early on Saturday. What was shocking was that there were no security guards on duty at the warehouse, enabling the thieves to cooly drive away an eight-tonne lorry packed with 542 boxes containing about 10,800 units of Western Digital hard disks worth an estimated RM4 million at 5.20am.

After Lucas Entertainment announced its determination to fight illegal file sharing, three other adult companies, CP Productions Inc., First Time Videos and Future Blue Inc. have begun to target online pirates.
Suits have been filed against 1,100 John Does by attorney John L. A top movie website has rejected a thriller about a TV crew being hunted in tunnels - and the producers, including Andrew Denton, believe it's because they want to give it away free.
Sydney independent film producer Enzo Tedeschi said he tried five times since June to get the film, The Tunnel listed on the Internet Movie Database, IMDb.com.
But each time it has been rejected and Mr Tedeschi - who has had other films accepted - believes it is because he wants to distribute it through BitTorrent - which is best known for the illegal sharing of movies and music.

New PCs could start in just seconds, thanks to an update to one of the oldest parts of desktop computers.
The upgrade will spell the end for the 25-year-old PC start-up software known as Bios that initialises a machine so its operating system can get going.
The code was not intended to live nearly this long, and adapting it to modern PCs is one reason they take as long as they do to warm up.
Bios' replacement, known as UEFI, will predominate in new PCs by 2011.

Earlier this month, word got out that, for the upcoming 2 “Alien” movies, director Ridley Scott was looking to get Gemma Arterton for the lead. Now, it turns out, he may not be able to do the pics at all.

Scott announced a while back that he was making not one, but two prequels to the legendary “Alien” franchise. In 3D to boot, because he wanted to go for Cameron’s “Avatar” and bring it down.

Scholastic recently published the results of a survey on how technology affects reading among children. It shows that kids might benefit from e-book readers, but it also might not matter in the long run because they'll be distracted by cell phones and the Internet.
The Scholastic survey asked 1,045 children and teenagers, ages 6-17, questions about their reading habits. The survey got input from their parents too. One of the most interesting finds is that children want to use technology to read. Over half of the kids age 9-17 said they were interested in reading e-books.
