Windows, Microsoft’s ubiquitous operating system, sits firmly in place.
One year after launch, licenses for the successor of Windows Vista,Windows 7, have gone over the counter no less than 240 million times.
As Microsoft points out, that makes it the fastest selling operating system in history, which is not super surprising when you consider how many were clamoring to upgrade from Vista, and XP for that matter.
Still, that’s nearly a quarter billion licenses, folks.

News Corp. founder Rupert Murdoch has likely never acknowledged (at least not publicly) that he has failed at something, particularly when it involves a market worth billions of dollars, but he appears to have conceded defeat in his attempt to build a competitor to Google News. According to several news reports today, an ambitious attempt to bundle News Corp. content along with that from other publishers and sell it as a subscription package — a venture code-named Project Alesia — has been axed, just weeks before it was supposed to launch.

Clearwire is getting near 100Mbps downloads on its LTE-based trial wireless network in Phoenix, a company executive said today.
During a keynote presentation here at the 4G World trade show, Michael Sievert, Clearwire's chief communications officer, shared initial speed test results on a trial network the company has built in Phoenix to test the next generation of a 4G technology called LTE, or Long Term Evolution. Clearwire announced it was testing LTE network technology in Phoenix in August.
According to Sievert, the company has clocked download speeds at 50 megabits per second using 10MHz channels for up and down speeds. When using 20MHz channels, the speeds go up to 90Mbps. These speeds are significantly faster than the 3Mbps to 6Mbps average download speeds the company currently gets on its commercial network, which uses a competing technology called WiMax.

Use of mobile phones and the Internet continues to skyrocket despite a huge difference in broadband pricing worldwide, a new study from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has found.
According to the United Nations-run organization, a whopping 6.1 trillion text messages will be sent by the end of 2010. That figure, which has tripled in the past three years, means people around the globe are sending 200,000 text messages every second.
Mobile phones are now available to 90 percent of the world's population. And so far, customers are taking advantage. The ITU estimates that there will be 5.3 billion mobile phone subscriptions by the end of the year. And in developed countries, there are an average of 116 subscriptions per 100 people.

The Israel Antiquities Authority and Google are teaming up to publish the Dead Sea Scrolls online.
The approximately 1,000 scrolls, managed by the IAA, were discovered in a series of caves near the Dead Sea in the West Bank. Dating from the second and first centuries, B.C.E., these Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek documents constituted a significant trove of information on the ancient world. And of course, they also contained the seeds of division.

Peter Moore, the president of the EA Sports division of publisher Electronic Arts, has said that his team has plans of making the crucial FIFA football simulation franchise less dependent on the yearly disk based launches, with a persistent online presence and other ways to engage fans.

Talking to MCV the game executive said that, “Personally I still think there'll be discs five years from now. But generally yes, of course, I think there will come a time when FIFA is less a disc that you wait for in late September/early October, and more something that we provide 365 days a year.”
